Text
The Anglican Church of Canada today sent a telegram to U.S. President Richard Nixon urging immediate cancellation of the proposed nuclear test blast on the Aleutian Island of Amchitka.
The telegram was signed Archbishop Edward Scott, Anglican Church Primate, and 37 Anglican bishops, on behalf of the House of Bishops.
The telegram reads: "The House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada, representing more than one million Canadians, urge you to cancel the proposed nuclear test blast on Amchitka Island."
"We fully support the Canadian Government's protest in this matter as stated by the Hon. Mitchell Sharp, Minister of External Affairs."
"We are deeply concerned about the possible environmental hazards of such a blast and its threat to the West Coast of North America, and possibly the entire Pacific Basin."
"We sincerely hope that you will announce cancellation of the test immediately."
Archbishop Scott urged Canadians actively to oppose the proposed nuclear test.
"Now that the Canadian Government has already protested to Washington, I think now it's a matter of public opinion both in Canada and the United States to mount further opposition," the Primate said.
"I would like to see people speak to their friends about this and raise the question about what is happening and ask if they want the kind of world where this kind of experimentation continues," he said.
He further urged Canadians to "influence wherever they can American people because I think the protest from the American people carries more weight with their own government than a Canadian protest."
