Why not ask somebody who would express these views directly and confidently, and who would, in doing so, show us those areas where the Church needed to examine its work great care ? We therefore asked Pierre Berton if he would write such a book for us". -- Foreword, p. 8.

This book "is designed to meet one of the problems of the modern Church -- rapidly changing ideas concerning clergy and laity, the Bible, science, denominations, the nature of the Church and, above all, our ideas about God himself. Its theme is that man has, throughout history, tried to imprison God; but that, as Christians begin to break free from their own restrictions, they are discovering that God is free. The writer sees the present movements in the Church as spelling the end of denominations and all religious exclusiveness". -- back cover.

"1968 will be a year of great ecumenical importance. In July the Fourth Assembly of the World Council of Churches will meet in Uppsala, Sweden, and will consider the role and mission of the Church in our shrinking world with all its problems of peace and war, of social and economic development. What it will ask, should be the new style of living for Christians in a secular age ? .... As the Youth Conference assembles in Scotland, the Lambeth Conference of Bishops from all over the Anglican Communion will be gathering in London to confer together on the Renewal of the Church in Faith, in Ministry, and in Unity. .... For this reason the British Council of Churches and the Conference of British Missionary Societies have felt it wise to encourage a unified publishing programme in Britain in preparation for the events of next year. This book is the most substantial part of that programme .... Here is a vividly written account of the work and the problems, the plans and the hopes of the Churches, as together they bear witness to the gospel and enter into mission in our secularized age". -- Foreword.

"The original Book of Common Praise was compiled in 1908. This revision has been carried out pursuant to a resolution moved by Magistrate James Edmund Jones, and seconded by the Rt. Rev. J.C. Farthing, Lord Bishop of Montreal, and carried unanimously at Montreal in September 1934. .... The average lifespan of a hymnal appears to be twenty-five years. Each generation, with its problems and outlook, must ever seek new ways of expressing its ideals and aspirations. .... This book contains 168 hymns, 22 Ancient Office Hymns, and 323 tunes, not found in the former book. 59 of such tunes occur more than once, making 382 new settings. .... Two new sections have been added under the captions 'Hymns for Youth' and 'God in Nature'. In accordance with the principle of inclusion, the revised book contains a number of Ancient Office Hymns, which are desired by a considerable number of Church people. .... The Chant section has been enlarged." -- Preface.
