"In 1993 the General Synod of the Church of England passed the Act of Synod whose measures formally recognized, and in a sense ratified, what was informally known as `the two integrities', a claim that it is possible for the church to hold two opposing views at the same time: that women can, and can not, be priests. The contributors to this book argue forcefully that the Act was a disaster, that it was a betrayal of the women about to be ordained and their successors, and that it has been profoundly damaging to the unity of the church and to the way it is perceived by those outside." -- back cover.

The Bishop of London, the Rt. Rev. David Hope, has announced what is called `The London Plan' in response to the Church of England's Ordination of Women to the Priesthood Measure. The Plan asks the Metropolitan (in this case the Archbishop of Canterbury) to designate a bishop (commissary) to ordain women in an area where the bishop will not do the same. The area bishop still maintains pastoral oversight as far as possible.

"A survey by MSF Clergy and Church Workers February 1998".
"Research by the Reverend Judy Lynas ... Comment and analysis by Chris Ball" -- p. [23].
"In August 1997 I undertook this survey. It arose from my own personal experience as a woman priest and also from the experience of some women from my own diocese. .... Bullying and harassment is no new thing for women in the workplace, but I am concerned that the Church of England does not offer protection or employment legislation for these situations. My decision to undertake the survey was finally boosted into action following a conversation with a woman priest who said to me, `People can get away with saying and doing things to a woman priest that they would not be able to do to racial minorities without recall'." The implications of the survey's findings are important to a range of parties. This report will be presented to the Advisory Board of Ministry in the Church of England ...". -- Intro. p. 3.
Contents: Introductory Note -- Preface -- The Survey -- Appendix: The Legal Background: The Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure 1993.
Survey divided into sections: 1. Background to the Study -- 2. Methodology -- 3. The Sample -- 4. Area Response -- 5. Harassment by Category -- 6. Where did the abuse/harassment come from ? -- 7. Experience of discrimination when applying for a post -- 8. Summary of Findings -- 9. Concluding Comments.

"[B]y Jonathan Petre".
"By the summer of 1993, more than 1,200 women had been ordained as priests in the Church of England, bringing to an end one of the most turbulent chapters in recent ecclesiastical history. Few issues have provoked such rancour and bitterness, division and dissent. This book is a journalist's attempt to capture some of the flavour of these extraordinary times -- from the early struggles of women to make their voices heard to the dramatic denouncement on 11 November 1992, and its aftermath. It is not written by an insider, nor does it aspire to the heights of an academic treatise". -- Preface.
Contents: Preface -- The Vote -- Chinese Whispers -- The Sixties -- The Philadelphia Incident (1970-74) -- False Starts (1975-79) -- The Wilderness (1980-84) -- Deus ex Machina (1985-86) -- Balancing Act (1986-87) -- The Lambeth Walk (1988-89) -- Crossroads (1989-91) -- Decisions and Divisions (1991-93) -- Departures (1993-94).
