"`The Community of Women and Men in the Church' is the report of the historic consultation in Sheffield in 1981 which marked the culmination of a four-year process of study and dialogue. The book tells the story behind Sheffield. It gives an account of what happened at the consultation: the actions and reactions, the speeches, events and resolutions. It also indicates how the study may be continued and its insights realized in the day-to-day life of the churches, so that the Church may be transformed into an authentic community of women and men". -- back cover.

"The Consultation of Church Women Executives, held in Glion near Montreux, Switzerland, January 17-22, 1977, was called by the sub-unit on Women in Church and Society of the World Council of Churches". -- p. 3.
Speaking of the purpose of the consultation, Moderator Sylvia Talbot said: "We have come together as part of a world-wide movement, the World Council of Churches, dedicated to the mission of the Church. We have come as leaders of women's work to to think together how we may use our power and influence to 'stir up the people of God', to mobilize women for better stewardship and more effective Christian witness. We have come to examine the nature and style of mission. We have come to answer the questions: How do we learn to identify and respond to the issues of the moment ? How do we encourage women in a ministry which is almost sure to be disruptive ? How do we help women 'to speak clearly, fully, and radically' to the whole Christian community as we were challenged to do in Berlin [in 1974], by Philip Potter, general secretary of the WCC ? How do we move women from the periphery of the Church's life to its centre ?" -- p. 4-5.

"One of the 'Concerns of the Church' which was discussed at the first Assembly of the World Council of Churches at Amsterdam in 1948 was 'the Life and Work of Women in the Church'. .... The amount of material which came from the different Churches was so considerable that it was impossible to produce more than a very provisional and short report for the Assembly itself, and it was therefore decided that a fuller report should be prepared. But there are reports and reports. The 'Commission on Life and Work of Women in the Church' which had been set up by the World Council after the Assembly considered that what was wanted was not a mere tabulation of the various national documents, but rather a personal interpretation of the situation as it was revealed in the material. It therefore asked Dr. Kathleen Bliss to present the facts together with her own evaluation of these facts. The result is this highly illuminating survey of the place and work of women in many Churches which may claim to represent the first world-wide study on this subject which has ever been made". -- Foreword.
