Prologue
The Primate read the following telegram to the House of Bishops from Canon Shafik Farah of Toronto:
"I pray you take a stand and speak out for peace with justice regarding the Palestinian/Israeli situation and for an end to the ongoing massacres in the occupied territories on the Gaza strip. How many more should die? And for how long should we wait ?"
Text
That this House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada deeply regrets the acts of violence in the occupied territories of the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. The Bishops endorse the proposal by the Anglican Consultative Council for an international conference for peace in which all parties affected would be present.
The Bishops call on the Government of Canada and all peace-loving citizens to promote and support such a proposal." CARRIED

A dozen Christian, Jewish and Muslim children spent time together in July 2002 at Camp Allen, the diocese of Texas camp. Kids4Peace is a program developed by Henry Carse, director of special programs at St. George's College, Jerusalem. "Kids4Peace was a natural extension of the `sheer weight of the fear shared by Israelis and Palestinians,' Henry Carse said, adding that he is convinced that the initiative will improve communication and understanding. `We have a chance to touch future leaders while they are still forming opinions'."
"From ENS. Thomas Blanton is assistant editor of the `Texas Episcopalian', newspaper of the Diocese of Texas. More information on the program and a selection of photos are available at www.kids4peace.org."

"The Anglican Church of Canada in January [2009] joined other members of the Anglican Communion and churches worldwide in calling for a ceasefire and a redoubling of efforts to secure lasting peace in Gaza, where thousands have been killed or injured after renewed fighting between Israeli military forces and the militant Palestinian group Hamas". "Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, called for 'an immediate cessation to the horrific violence' in Gaza which erupted on Dec. 27 [2008]." "The national bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), Susan Johnson who was part of a delegation that traveled in the Middle East last month [January 2009], urged Prime Minister Harper to reconsider the Canadian government's position that solely blamed Hamas for the violence". "During a meeting with Israel's chief rabbis, visiting Lutheran bishops also told Israel's chief rabbis that the conduct of Israel's military campaign raised questions about a 'just war theory', noting the 'proportionality and killing of innocents', reported Ecumenical News International." The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) "also responded to the emergency appeals from ACT (Action by Churches Together) with an initial grant of $20,000". The Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem, Suheil S. Dawani "asked for prayers and financial support as the Al Ahli Arab Hospital, an institution supported by the diocese, struggled to provide critical health care in the area".
Article also includes photo with caption: "About 700 protesters demonstrate on Parliament Hill, against Israel's military action in Gaza. Among speakers condemning the attacks were Jews and Christians, including Anglican priest Robert Assaly of Ottawa."

"The philosophy that PWRDF uses to undertake its work is one of partnership, accompaniment, and dignity". "In Chihuahua City, Mexico, PWRDF works with the Women's Human Rights Centre (CEDEHM) to address complex issues involving women's rights, violence against women, femicide (the killing of women simply because they are women), and other human rights concerns. One important case that CEDEHM has been working on is the murder of Marisela Escobedo. She was shot in cold blood in the square across the road from the Governor's Palace in Chihuahua City while she protested the lack of justice for her own murdered daughter, Rubi".

Notes
"Bethlehem today experiences fear, violence and division. Security fears of one community leads to division and alienation from its neighbours; the enormous wall built right through the City, consolidates division and marginalization. The promise of peace from of old is still unfulfilled in this City which lies at the heart of our Christian faith. We took the Christmas decorations down weeks ago, to be put away for another year. Yet we should not forget Bethlehem and all its people, Christians, Muslims and Jews, who live the daily reality of fear and division, and we should pray for them and for their leaders continually that all may be led into the way of peace".

"The Crusades had effected a tragic sea change in Jerusalem where the coexistence that once prevailed now seems an impossible dream. In the West, the Crusades were also decisive. The Crusades made the hatred of Jews an incurable disease in Europe, and Islam would henceforth be seen as the irreconcilable enemy of Western civilization. These Western prejudices have certainly played their part in today's conflict, and affect the way Western people view the Middle East today in highly complex ways". -- Preface, . ix.
