"Anger, Sex, Doubt and Death. When I began to write on sources of stress in the life of Christian ministers I quickly identified these as the four areas of greatest difficulty. .... I have added an epilogue on the central claim of the gospel, why it is good news, why it invites the response of gratitude rather than fear. .... This book is based on lectures I gave in 1991 at the invitation of the Faculty of Theology at Durham University". -- Preface.

"The past five years in Canada have seen a remarkable upsurge of concern and creative initiatives to support and strengthen family life. Among the more notable events have been the Canadian Conference on the Family held in Ottawa in 1964, which led directly to the establishment of the Vanier Institute on the Family; the Second North American Conference on the Family held in Hamilton in June 1966; and the two symposia on Family Planning (April 1966), and Family Life Education (September 1967), both of which were sponsored by Ortho Pharmaceutical (Canada) Ltd.
Several Canadians who were present at the 1966 Hamilton Conference felt that it had suffered from a lack of adequate theological support. This concern was discussed in the Faith and Order Commission of the Canadian Council of Churches, and the Council requested this Commission to undertake a research project on Sexuality and Family Life. Ortho Pharmaceutical (Canada) Ltd. generously supported this two-year study as well as the printing of the resulting report". -- Foreword.

"What are the most important biblical texts for modern Christians to read in order to arrive at responsible decisions regarding the ethics of human sexual behavior ? How should the Bible be used in this enterprise ? The contributors to this book, all noted biblical scholars, confront these questions as they deal with issues surrounding the ethics of sexual behavior, in general, and the divisive issue of gay/lesbian ordination in particular. They provide for the reader a deeper understanding of the Bible, its intentions, and its variety." -- back cover.

The author, a conservative Episcopal priest, has written these book, consisting of three essays "in response to two items published by diocesan commissions in the Episcopal Church on the matter of changing sexual morality" (p. 1) and out of his conviction that "None of this could have happened had the Church not lost its own sense of identity in the Biblical framework, the Biblical cosmos, and the Biblical God and Father of the cosmos. None of this could have happened had the Church had a healthy relationship to the scientific community. Had we been rooted in the truth in a healthy way, we would have spotted this poison, named it for what it was, and thrown it out of our midst" (p. 3). -- Intro.

"It is now twenty years since HIV/AIDS came out of the shadows. Then, church facilities were among the first to respond to the challenge. Ever since, churches have been deeply involved, with the Catholic Church alone supporting around 25% of all HIV/AIDS care worldwide. But the epidemic continues to escalate, accompanied by complaints that religious organizations do more harm than good when it comes to HIV prevention. .... The aim of this article is to throw some light on the challenges facing church leaders, as they grapple with the consequences of this new commitment (p. [1])".
Contents: A new commitment -- Saving lives, saving souls -- Silence and stigma: the biggest enemies -- Chastity or common sense ? -- Church leadership and national strategy -- Training and theological formation -- How can I help ? -- Endnotes.
