That there exists throughout the country a number of schools for boys and girls (commonly called private schools) directly or indirectly under the supervision of the Church, we therefore recommend that the greatness of the opportunity which these schools afford the Church be more definitely recognized, and that greater interest in them should be shown by the Synods of the Church, and every encouragement be given them in the promotion of vital religion and in developing in the pupils a spirit of enthusiastic devotion to the service of mankind through their Church. Text
That the following resolution be referred to the Long Range Planning Committee:
"Whereas it seems increasingly difficult for Christians to achieve a Christian educational environment in the Public School System;
And Whereas the present provisions for religious exercises and instruction tend to convey the impression that Christianity is an optional appendage to the whole of life;
And Whereas we do not think it fitting in these times of increasing cooperation among the Churches to try to set up a specifically Anglican school system;
Be It Resolved that the National Executive Council be asked to investigate the possibility of Anglican participation in the development of a specifically Christian-oriented tax-supported school system wherever possible across Canada in co-operation with the Roman Catholic Church, the United Church of Canada, and any other interested communions of the Church,
And to this end, also request that the National Executive Council first be asked to have a study made of the implications of Christian responsibility in public education, with particular reference to the goals and philosophies of present educational practices in the various provinces of Canada." Text
That whereas the Report presented to General Synod on Canadian Educational Systems has emphasized the fundamental place of Religion in Education, and that the development of an informed, enlightened and active Christian public opinion on this matter is vital in all our provinces and communities, we urge clergy and laity alike to co-operate with other Christian communions, and men and women of goodwill, in the development of such a Christian public opinion to the end that in our Christian democracy -
(i) Christianity may be given its rightful place in the thinking and action of our several Departments of Education;
(ii) Teachers, and teachers-in-training in Normal Schools may be helped to realize that in a Christian community an education which ignores Christianity is no true education;
(iii) Proper provision may be made for Christian Instruction and Worship in our Public Schools and Secondary Schools where such are non-existent;
(iv) An improvement brought about in such regulations where they are not adequate; and
(v) A full use made of these regulations where they are already on the Statute Books of a province. CARRIED in both Houses.
