"This is a guidebook for the second journey [from conception to death] which we are all making. It is written especially for bewildered, confused or disillusioned Christians, who have a love-hate relationship with the Church to which they belong, or once belonged. .... for God is the God of surprises who, in the darkness and the tears of things, breaks down our false images and securities. This in-breaking can feel to us like disintegration, but it is the disintegration of the ear of wheat: if it does not die to bring new life, it shrivels away on its own." -- Preface.
Contents: Preface / Gerard W. Hughes -- Where Your Treasure Is -- Clearing the Approaches -- Inner Chaos and False Images of God -- Tools for Digging : Some Methods of Prayer -- General Directions for Digging -- Changing Directions -- Beginning to Dig for the Treasure -- Recognizing the Treasure When You Find It -- A Most Surprising God -- Knowing Christ -- His Passion and Resurrection in Our Lives -- The Decision in Every Decision : God or Mammon -- The Valley Speaks : God and the Nuclear Threat -- Epilogue.
"The reflections which follow will be designed precisely for such 'reluctant presiders', hesitant, perhaps, because of the power of traditional role distinctions, yet needing to acknowledge at some fundamental level that each of us ought to be able to be called upon in certain circumstances to lead others in prayer. The intended audience this includes parents learning to bless their children, loved ones brought to deepest prayer at a sick bed, unsuspecting group participants who are asked to open a meeting with prayer, guests invited to bless God at table, family or friends longing to be able to bless God at table, family or friends, longing to be able to comfort one another at a wake service or a funeral, parishioners asked to preside at a Lenten evening prayer, and sponsors initiating their catechumens in the ways of Christian prayer (p. 2). "This essay will therefore attempt to communicate some basic knowledge about the community's traditional patterns of prayer, about the symbols and gestures and words which have formed and transformed men and women over the ages. It will also address the very concrete skills needed by a leader of prayer. (p. 8)". -- Surfacing the Issues.

"Dialogue, discernment, participation, pondering. These forms of prayer need to be deepened by intentional doing -- practiced as disciplines during regularly scheduled times during the week. This means exercising each as we might practice scales, chords, or arpeggios in order to play Beethoven fluidly and with style" (p. 14). "Our relationships with others flow directly from our primal way of being, which for the Christian is prayer. The conversion of consciousness I have been describing is tested not so much by heavy moral decisions as by our spontaneity -- when on the down escalator we smile at the stranger going up as the Spirit within us greets the Spirit in another" (p. 15).

"What is a saint ? How does a person become one ? Will an Australian soon be officially recognized as a saint ? These were some of the questions raised in 1995 when Pope John Paul II visited Australia for the ceremony to mark the beatification of Mary McKillop. The celebration caught the imagination of many Australians, and it provided the stimulus for this paper on prayer and the saints, prepared by and for Roman Catholics and Anglicans". Includes eight "Questions for reflection and discussion" at the end.
