"This book gathers together my complete hymn texts, which I have interspersed with related prayers and poems. The prayers deepen and extend the meaning of what the congregation sings. The poems encourage reflection upon the hymns and often reveal a line or an idea that inspired a hymn. I have grouped the hymns by images and patterns of association. This allows the reader to trace the web of metaphor and meaning that pervades the collection". -- Preface.

Indeed, it is only within the support of a group that an individual learns how to live out their own faith. The author provides a practical and accessible model of spiritual formation for self-directing groups that can be led by clergy or laity. "Anyone thirsting for a more intimate and disciplined life of prayer will find a rich wellspring in `The Cup of Life'. In this original and practical book Joyce Rupp shares how the ordinary cups that we use each day can become sacred vessels that connect us with life and draw us ever closer to God. She explores how the cup is a rich symbol of life, with its emptiness and fullness, its brokenness and flaws, and all of its blessings. This creative guide for individual and group prayer offers six weekly themes based on different images of the cup. The open cup, the chipped cup, the broken cup, the blessing cup ... each in turn becomes a teacher in prayer". -- back cover.

"Since 2015, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has been inviting young people from across the world to spend 'a year in God's time' with the Community of St. Anselm, a program in communal spiritual living. For 10 months of the year, participants live at Lambeth Palace, London, Welby's official resident and office, praying, studying and worshiping together while serving the local community through volunteer work. In its 2018-2019 year, the community had its first Canadian member: Melissa Ritz, 29, an Anglican from Edmonton. The 'Anglican Journal' spoke with Ritz to learn more about her experience of what Lambeth Palace calls 'a daring experiment in following Christ'."

"How do you pray ? Why do you pray ? ... This month, we begin a series on prayer, which will explore these questions and more. ... It may surprise people to know that prayer is 'alive and well' in Canada, according to an Angus Reid Institute Survey released in 2016. Prayer occupies a 'prominent' place in the lives of many Canadians even though they live in one of the most secular countries in the world, the survey noted. Among the key findings: 42% of Canadians pray at least once a week; 44% engage in a prayer activity each month".
