"The first major attempt since 1928 to revise the Daily Offices was made by the Standing Liturgical Commission in 1957 with the publication of 'Prayer Book Studies VI' entitled 'Morning and Evening Prayer'. Since then, the process of liturgical revision has gathered momentum throughout the Anglican Communion and in all Christian Churches. .... The Drafting Committee on the Daily Offices was constituted as follows: The Reverend Charles W.F. Smith ... Chairman." -- Preface.
"The Standing Liturgical Commission presents for the Church's consideration two versions of the Daily Office, one in contemporary English, the other in the language of the Prayer Book and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Each version is a single form intended for both the morning and the evening Office. In addition, new services are provided for use at noonday and at the close of the day, and short forms for use by families or individuals praying alone". -- Intro., p. 5.

"The Orders of Service contained in this Study are essentially identical with those published in 'Prayer Book Studies 22'. Thus, the rationale set forth in the Introduction to that publication applies to this Study as well. Trial use has demonstrated the desirability of rearranging the various elements of each Order of Service .... It is hoped that the new arrangement will make the Offices, as printed here, easier to follow, without obscuring their structure. There were three other sources of difficulty in giving trial use to the Daily Office: First, the absence of a new lectionary ... secondly, the absence of a complete Psalter; and thirdly, the delay in the publication of 'Prayers, Thanksgivings, and Litanies; (Prayer Book Studies 25). The delay in producing all these materials was unavoidable, but these defects have now been remedied". -- Preface.

Notes
"The settings contained in this booklet are from 'The Hymnal 1982', and are found at S 296- S304 (Noonday) and S 321- S 337 (Compline). The hymns are reprinted from the Singers Edition of the Hymnal. Hymn numbers in parentheses refer to the proper number in the Singers Edition". -- Acknowledgements.
"While Anglicans have long cherished the practice of reciting Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer -- often with singing, the Episcopal Church increasingly has also discovered the richness of the brief noonday and late evening Offices only since forms for these services appeared in the 'Book of Common Prayer', 1979. These so called 'little offices', historically owned exclusively by set-apart religious communities, now have been claimed by the church at large. Accordingly, 'The Hymnal 1982' has provided hymns and other traditional musical forms in its Appendix for the singing of these services. There are not many congregations apart from monasteries and convents where it is practical to sing the noonday and late evening Offices on a daily basis. Nonetheless, with repetition and in time, the music of these services and the practice of singing may add considerable beauty and depth of expression to the words prayed". -- Intro.
