"In worship, our ideologies stand exposed, and nowhere is this clearer than in the assumptions expressed in our language. Increasingly, the convention by which God has been addressed in terms that are exclusively male has caused discomfort among worshippers; but the problem of finding new words is not simple. ... Much more potentially creative is the writing of new texts in vigorous language, which also respects and inhabits ancient worship with forms, evocative biblical imagery, and familiar cadences and rhythms". -- Preface, p. xi.

"In this provocative collection of [eleven] essays, noted liturgist and author Willian Seth Adams challenges the church to examine its thinking and assumptions about how Christians worship. Warning that `the way we've always done `it' may no longer be a valid premise. Adams says that the church must think something different, do something different and, finally, move some physical and emotional furniture. These essays, originally published in a variety of collections and journals, have finally been brought together in one stimulating volume and that will be a valuable resource for the general reader and the seasoned liturgical scholar" -- back cover.

"Prepared by the Standing Liturgical Commission".
"The subject and study of this book -- the language of liturgy -- are no longer new for the Episcopal Church. .... The content of this book is noticeably different. Previous volumes presented the new services in their entirety, to introduce them more easily to worshipping congregations. In this volume, the worship materials are offered as resources to supplement existing Rite II services of the 'Book of Common Prayer'. .... The first intent of this book, then, is to provide optimum flexibility in planning worship with supplemental liturgical materials. A second intent, no less important than the first, is that brief reference materials be as easily accessible as possible. Instead of being contained in a separate volume, as before, the educational commentary is here bound together with the new or suggested texts. An updated bibliography directs the interested worshipper to further educational resources". -- Preface, pp. 5, 7.
Contents: Preface / Sarah Motley -- Introduction -- Supplemental Liturgical Materials -- Appendix A : Background / Leonel L. Mitchell -- Appendix B : Bibliography -- Appendix C : The Hymnal 1982 and Inclusive Language -- Appendix D: Evaluation -- An Objective Survey for Congregational Use.

"The language of Christian liturgical prayer springs from the deep wells of Scripture, tradition and human experience -- constantly changing and complex. .... The services in 'Prayer Book Studies 30 : Supplemental Liturgical Texts' also have as their source these distinct but entirely linked currents of prayer. While the Offices and Holy Eucharist will be readily recognized as familiar forms of Anglican prayer, structured in familiar sequence, they also reflect the increasing sensitivity of the English language that certain words, images, and phrases are changing in meaning, particularly those which contain reference to gender". -- Preface.

Notes
"`Voices Found : Women in the Church's Song' is a rich collection of hymns and spiritual songs by, for, and about women. Overall, the music is written in congregational hymn style and is intended for use in the average parish church. There is also historical material and music arranged for women's voices. There are texts most appropriate for women's conferences and for children's informal activities, as this book seeks to expand the concept of congregational singing". -- Preface, p. [3].
This supplement was produced in response to a resolution of the 1997 General Convention "that the Standing Commission on Church Music be directed to prepare an additional supplement [to `The Hymnal 1982'] which emphasizes liturgical music, hymns and other songs by women composers and poets both historical and contemporary; texts and music to be included which celebrate the contributions and diversity of women in scripture, women saints and churchwomen". Preface, p. [4].
"This book is a unique compilation of contemporary and historical materials that crosses boundaries of geography, time, and culture as it represents the diversity of the gifts of women. It is the hope of the committees that this innovative collection of music will affirm and expand the spirituality of all women and men as they find new voices in the church's song". -- Preface, p. [5].
Includes indexes.
Contains 166 hymns and spiritual songs.
