"I want to present for discussion two theories that might help promote the aims of the Mothers' Union to encourage parents to bring up their children in the Church and to promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children. The first is that, for Christians, `the family' is a central concept, but we might not be using the word in the way it is generally used. And the second is that it is not the job of the family to sustain and reform society, but society's job to sustain and reform the family". "Our Western society has put intolerable pressures on the family by assuming that it should be all-sufficient and that it should be the basic carrier of Christianity, and Christians have sometimes made it worse by reading the Bible for signs that the family is at the heart of God's work in the world, and ignoring all the evidence that, as far as the Bible is concerned, it is actually the whole people of God who are responsible for carrying God's meaning to the world, not the family alone."

"Around the world men and women are involved in peacemaking and reconciliation and the church often plays a significant role in bringing warring sides together. .... A report last year from the International Peace Institute, called 'Reimagining Peacemaking: Women's Roles in Peace Processes', found that women had a vital role to play in the peacemaking process, but more importantly, when women were involved an agreement was more likely to be reached and it was also more likely to last" (p. 14)". "Members of the Anglican Church and the Mothers' Union (MU) in the Solomon Islands have many stories of how women play a key role in reconciliation. Anglican Alliance Facilitator for the Pacific, Tagolyn Kabekabe, says in the matriarchal society of the Pacific Islands women command respect and their maternal instincts make them seek and negotiate peace, whatever the cost" (p. 14). "Regional Development Manager at the Mothers' Union in London, Johanna Fadipe, said the MU have a prized place in many communities and can bring peace about because of their respected position" (p. 15). "Sarah Snyder said, 'We need to stand alongside women in their suffering but we also need to recognize and stand with them in the front line. They have a moral influence that allows them to sensitively address growing anger and shift into non violent forms of expression" (p. 15).

"Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, has thanked his Burundian counterpart, Archbishop Bernard Ntahoturi, for the Anglican Church of Burundi's stance against cross-border interventions, notwithstanding its opposition to more liberal views on homosexuality in some churches in Canada". Archbishop Ntahoturi said that his province "'doesn't want the crossing of borders .... We walk in different contexts but we value our communion as human beings' ... who added that he would like to 'open more doors' of partnership between the Burundian and Canadian churches." The two archbishops met when a Canadian Anglican delegation travelled to Burundi in February 2009. Archbishop Hiltz also praised the work of the Mothers' Union in Burundi as a "'real force for good ... We could benefit from some partnerships with the Mothers' Union here. Our ACW (Anglican Church Women) and Mothers' Union could use a boost, a shot in the arm in ways that they can bear witness to the Gospel', he said. The Mothers' Union, which Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams dubbed 'the fifth instrument of unity' in the Anglican Communion, has 3.65 million members in 76 countries."

"Around Mothers' Union members took part in services at Winchester Cathedral to mark the 140th Anniversary of the organisation. The second service was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The celebration services took place in Winchester Diocese as the movement was founded there in 1876 by Mary Sumner. Today, Mothers' Union continues to promote the role of mothers as a catalyst for positive change in communities across the world. Queen Elizabeth II, the Patron of Mothers' Union, expressed her best wishes for the 'continuing success of a charity that has given hope and strength to so many'. The Mary Sumner Choir from Zambia travelled to attend and sing at both services, and they were joined by fellow members from all over the world. Mothers' Union continues to campaign for women's rights and in particular for gender equality -- in relationship, in communities and in cultures -- and how this is reflected in national law and attitude. It campaigns against abuse and violence against women and girls in over 80 countries". [Text of entire article.]

"In one of his last acts as Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams commissioned Mrs. Lynne Tembey as the new Worldwide President of Mothers' Union's four million members worldwide in December 2012. Archbishop Rowan called Lynne Tembey to a service of obedience to meeting the agenda of the needy, and commended Mothers' Union's outgoing president, Rosemary Kempsell, for doing just that during her six years in office. Lynne, a Mothers' Union member for the past 33 years, will head up the most culturally diverse Board of Trustees in the organisation's 136 year history, with six elected trustees from Zambia, Kenya, Ghana, DR Congo, Guyana and Isle of Man joining with nine trustees from the UK and Ireland to form the new Board from January 2013. Elected representative members from Tanzania and Mozambique will sit on advisory committees to the Board". [Text of entire article.]
