Anglican Church of Canada : Response to the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches : Re: Faith and Order paper number 111 : Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry
"The gathering of the Anglican response to B.E.M. was undertaken by the Inter-Church and Inter-Faith Relations Committee of General Synod in consultation with the Ministry Committee and the Doctrine and Worship Committee. Following its approval by Inter-Church and Inter-Faith Relations in November, 1985 the National Executive Council agreed to forward this statement to the World Council of Churches as the 'initial response' of the Anglican Church of Canada". -- p. 21.

"The three lectures here printed for private circulation were originally delivered at a conference of clergy representing the dioceses of Athabaska, Calgary, Edmonton, Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, and Saskatoon, under the chairmanship of the Primate of All Canada (at that time the Bishop of Edmonton). ..... These lectures were only one part of the programme. Two presentations of each subject were given -- the first in each case by my friend Dr. E.R. Fairweather of Trinity College, and the second immediately after by myself. The two sets of lectures will shortly be published together, and this will serve to explain one serious omission or lack of balance in the papers here printed. .... I have been concerned to present to members of my own Church what I believe to be the convincing grounds upon which we should adopt a generous and humble policy towards non-episcopal Communions in our desire to share with them, in a united Church, our heritage of historic succession". -- Intro.
Contents: Dedication -- Introduction dated Wycliffe, College, Toronto, February 1952 -- Apostolic Succession -- The Catholic Church -- Reunion and Intercommunion.
"[O]ne major and unnoticed consequence of Apostolicae curae, I would argue, has been that the Bull subconsciously so dented Anglican self-esteem that it distorted Anglican ecumenical approaches to other churches. Since 1896 we have over-emphasized the issue of episcopal succession as an unconscious compensation for Apostolicae curae."
Imprimatur dated Westminster, 5th March 1977. -- verso of t.-p.
Includes bibliography, p. 16.
"In 1896 Pope Leo XIII in a Bull entitled 'Apostolicae Curae' ... declared that 'ordinations performed according to the Anglican rite have been and are completely null and void' .... Is it possible that Pope Leo was mistaken, so that a later Pope could revoke the Bull ? Or that the situation has changed so much over the last eighty years that the verdict, though correct in 1896, is not longer correct today ? If on the other hand the condemnation must still stand, what hope is there for the future relations between the two Churches ? This pamphlet is one man's attempt not only to explain the past but to explore the future. If the reader wishes to consider other points of view, he will find guidance in the Bibliography". -- p. 3.
Contents divided into sections: Not a new decision -- The origins of Anglican orders -- Leo XIII's judgement -- Defect of form -- Defect of intention -- The underlying reasons -- Forward through reordination ? -- A new assessment ? -- The meaning of 'validity' -- Apostolic succession -- The concept of ministry -- Conclusion -- References -- Bibliography.
