"How do we commend the Christian faith to the non-believer, the undecided, or the lapsed ? .... Jesus announces the good news that the Kingdom of God -- God's merciful and healing power -- is at hand. His actions confirm, illustrate, explain the words: 'God's finger' heals, restores life, feeds, cleanses from sin, liberates from greed or lust. This I think, is Bishop Armstrong's point in relating evangelism and 'the underside of history', the world of the weak, the defeated, the 'nonperson'. Gutierrez puts the question in these terms: 'How to announce God as Father in a world where there are no brothers ?' Christians 'commend' the message -- illustrate it, explain it,confirm it, make it 'believable' -- when they become 'brothers' ('neighbor' is the word that Jesus used) of the suffering. In today's world, justice is the 'sign' that must accompany the word". -- Foreword, p. ix-x.

Ideologies are a continuing concern of CCPD for the simple reason that they appear on both sides of the struggle against injustice; the oppressors as well as the oppressed ride on ideologies". -- Foreword, p. 1.

"Impunity -- the situation in which those accused of gross and systematic human rights violations or crimes against humanity are not charges, tried or punished, whether because of amnesty, pardon or deliberate inaction -- is a critical issue in international law today. It also raises profound moral and ethical issues. For the churches of the world the question is linked with theological convictions, pastoral concerns and often the experience of their own costly engagement in defense of human rights during periods of oppression and torture." -- back cover.

Studies originally prepared "for the congress on 'The Laity in Ministry' (held at Andover Newton Theological School in the United States, October 1985)". -- Intro., p. [7].
"The term `laity' has always been problematic, and I believe that we have now come to a dead end with this designation ... When this term is used in the following pages, it simply designates men, women, and children who attempt to live as Christians both in the presence of God and in the midst of the world. Thus, the `ministry of the laity' concerns primarily the human vocation, lived in the light of Christ. Three worldwide human quests will be taken up to examine how Christ responds to them: `The Human Search for Wisdom' as we face the present threat of annihilation of creation -- and the response of Christ the sage. `The Human Cry for Justice' because of the oppressive impact of present economic and political structures -- and what Christ the crucified teaches us in the struggle for justice. `The Human Need for Identity as many cultures and social groups experience a deep crisis of selfhood -- and the way in which Christ the artist can restore God's image in us. .... In the 1950s and 1960s the fourth chapter of Ephesians played an important role in the reflection on the ministry of the laity. This text has been reexamined, and the transcription of a Bible study on it concludes the three studies". -- Intro., pp. 8, 9.

"'JPIC is at the heart of an ecumenical vision for the next millennium.' That was the judgment of the WCC Central Committee which met in Geneva ten days after the close of the World Convocation on Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (Seoul, Republic of Korea, 5-12 March 1990). It was a clear recognition of the fact that the process begun at the Vancouver WCC Assembly (1983) should continue. It was also a recognition of the fact that the world convocation had gone a considerable way in furthering this process. This brochure contains the major documents from the convocation. It also contains excerpts from the speeches, sermons and testimonies as well as some liturgical material from the convocation. At the end of the brochure, there is a list of selected material on JPIC. All these are intended for use in the on-going JPIC process in churches, local congregations, regional and local ecumenical organizations, Christian World Communions, and movements and groups for justice, peace and the integrity of creation". -- Intro., p. 2.

"The biblical Jubilee that was celebrated once every fifty years is referred to in Leviticus 25 as the 'Sabbath of Sabbaths'. Its requirements included that the land lie fallow, all debts be forgiven, captives be freed, and a celebration held. Maria Harris considers the implications of a living Jubilee for today and for the next century. She offers a compelling argument that a living Jubilee is a comprehensive spirituality that would have a positive political, economic, and moral impact on individuals, families, religious congregations, institutions and nations". -- back cover.

"A month ago, the world woke up to learn that an elite team of U.S. Navy Seals had entered a fortified compound north of Islamabad and shot dead the unarmed Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted man and the Al-Qaeda mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. World reaction was swift, with many saying that justice had been done, others that a summary execution was no substitute for a fair trial. In the U.S., some took to the streets to celebrate" (p. 1). "The 'Anglican Journal' asked Christians for their thoughts" (p. 1). Includes comments and quotations from the Rev. Chris Hayes (Quispamsis, N.B.), the Rev. Dr. Gary Nicolosi (London, Ont.), the Rev.
