"The first administrative act of a new hymnal committee should ideally be to decide whether there is to be a handbook or Companion to the collection which they are to compile, so that the two books, if there are to be two, can be worked upon together. The Committee which produced our hymn book had, however, no authority from the Churches which they represented to issue or to sponsor such a handbook; and indeed until the last stages of its work on the hymnal there was nobody in sight with the time to perform such an honorary task. This book is therefore in no sense an 'official' handbook, and nothing in it can be laid to the charge of the Australian Hymn Book Committee. The members thought, however, that the issue of a handbook would be desirable; they gave me the use of the editorial materials that had accumulated during their work ... and they have been available for advice and help during the preparation of this book". -- Preface.

"The 1977 Australian Hymn Book contained mainly 'hymns'. With the reawakened interest in psalms, and with the emergence of the newer `worship songs', `Together in Song' contains a blend of hymns, psalms, songs and responses. It could be said to be international, ecumenical and contemporary. It is international in that material is drawn from no fewer than 48 countries. It is ecumenical in that it represents the liturgical insights of those churches represented on its Editorial Committee. It is contemporary in that all the material, whether old or new, is presented so that today's worshippers can use it without embarrassment or confusion". -- Foreword, p. viii.
"Together in Song" is an ecumenical hymn book which includes the participation of the Anglican Church of Australia.

"In 1968 a group of clergy and organists representing Anglicans, Congregationalists, Methodists and Presbyterians met to discuss the possibility of publishing an ecumenical hymn book in Australia. Each of these churches had established Hymn Book Committees to assess the adequacy of their present books and to recommend a way forward. When these four committees met together, they agreed that it was time for a contemporary hymn book to be prepared, and they realised that they could help each other to achieve their common aim. So it was that the Australian Hymn Book Committee was formed. .... In 1975 Professor Wesley Milgate was appointed Executive Editor by the Hymn Book Committee". -- Committee Foreword.
