- "The consequences of these discoveries is that a separate work needs to be devoted to Bishop Seabury and the liturgical and constitutional crises of 1784 through 1790, and that the other revisions receive treatment later. This brought a final surprise: There emerged a great deal to admire about an unpopular person whose politics and liturgical theology many have portrayed as unhelpful, eccentric, or dangerous. .... Over the past three centuries, formal liturgical studies have been primarily concerned with the evolution of texts, for good reason. The reader will find that earlier sources and better texts for the ancient collects are supplied than were available to Brightman when 'The English Rite' was prepared. Modern sources for the newer collects have also been located and presented here with their authors identified. Some collects can be seen to have textual sources not previously identified by commentators.
