"Somewhere in the middle, though, there are those of us who, like me, simply don't know all the answers to the myriad problems facing us. We are not, however, without a compass. We have our list of basics too. Prayer and worship are central to us, and our hesitancy about quick answers to difficult questions has more to do with reverence for mystery than with absence of conviction" (p. 2). .... This book is about my vision for living out this vibrant Christianity within the Anglican tradition. It is presented in four parts. In Part I, I'll look at the present climate that pits fundamentalism against "modernism" and examine the ways each impacts the crisis in Anglicanism today. Both extremes display an excessive "rationalism" that's entirely foreign to Anglicanism. In Part II, I'll take a look at the caricatures of Anglicanism as a manifestation of of muddled and fuzzy thinking. In Part III, I'll define Anglican Orthodoxy ... It can be a dangerous word meaning "right belief", but I think it's worth rehabilitating -- as an orientation towards a transcendent mystery, seen, in part, through the eyes of two archbishops: Peter Carnley ... and Rowan Williams .... Finally, Part IV examines Anglicanism through the eyes of some of its greatest exemplars, with special reference to John Donne and the struggles of the seventeenth century (pp. 7-8)". -- Intro.

"'Since thou dost love, yet strike ...' In these few words is made explicit the particular perspective from which the poet [George Herbert] speaks -- the perspective of Faith. God loves; and from this elemental fact of Christian experience is derived the whole canon of Herbert's devotional poetry". "Herbert knew God's love, and was assured of its eternal constancy, through God's act of love in Christ; his own love he mistrusted, and begged to have increased. Inconstancy, for Donne, was the dreaded possibility that threatened the reality of God's love; but that threat had meaning only in the reality of the poet's doubt".
