"Edited by Dr. Percy Dearmer, Canon of Westminster".
"The issue, indeed, is simple. The motives and methods of human life are not sufficiently moralised: it was to moralise the machinery of production, to limit the power of selfishness, that Wilberforce and Shaftesbury were working a century ago; and the whole world now enjoys what Christians then won: but in many ways industry and business, and family life, and civic and political activity, need further moralisation. Money -- the necessary use of tokens of exchange -- has been overlooked in its moral aspect (in spite of what Christ said about it) .... And, alas, there was one aspect of human life which was not understood a hundred years ago; and to this our present miseries are mainly due. The very word 'international' had then only just been coined by Jeremy Bentham. The whole conception of moralising international relations was in its infancy. So the world went on to its doom. So, because the nations and their representatives have not yet learnt the elements of international behaviour, we stand at this moment of writing on the brink of irretrievable disaster. It is in a very real sense true that only Christ can save the world from ruin to-day. Are we prepared to let his spirit save the nations from themselves ?" -- Preface, p. 10-11.

"As moderator of the Sixth Conference on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches (WCC) meeting in Athens in May 2005, and of its Commission from 1999-2006, it is my pleasure to introduce this report to you. .... it is important to have this book with its record of key features of the conference, the plenary papers, reflections and other documents in order to continue to inform and inspire the whole ecumenical movement as we engage faithfully in the mission of God. Not that the writing of this report has been without challenges. The deliberately different nature of the Conference with its varied 'synaxeis' and limited time in debate in plenary, together with increasing use of 'power-point' presentations rather than written and read papers, makes the documenting of the Conference difficult. For those who were present, we hope this volume will act as an aide-memoire; for those who were not present, we hope it gives something of the flavour of the Conference and its content; for those who ask of the ecumenical movement where it is in its thinking about mission, we hope it provides a snapshot". -- Intro.
"The Athens Conference was organized and led by the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME), acting on behalf of the World Council of Churches (WCC). It is a conference to be counted among the world mission conferences organized first by the International Missionary Council (IMC) from 1921 to 1961, then, following the merger of the IMC with the WCC, by the CWME. .... Usually one counts the following conferences as the official list of the IMC and WCC world mission conferences, beginning with Edinburgh in 1910, Jerusalem, 1928; Tambaram, 1938; Whitby, 1947; Willingen, 1952; Accra, 1958, and New Delhi 1961 (the assembly accomplishing the merger between IMC and WCC); Mexico City, 1963; Bangkok, 1973; Melbourne, 1980; San Antonio, 1989; Salvador da Bahia, 1996; and Athens 2005". -- p. 11, Preparing for Athens 2000-2005

"In this era of 'faith-based intiatives', congregations increasingly find themselves in the business of establishing and supporting community ministries -- daycare for infants and toddlers, respite care for elders, and programs for housing rehab and home repair, tutoring, and social justice advocacy. In this volume, Carl S. Dudley revises and updates his earlier book, 'Basic Steps toward Community Ministry', which Loren Mead called `the most valuable book on parish ministry I've seen in a decade'." -- inside front cover.

"This book is about empowering congregations, especially the clergy and lay leaders who exercise their faith in developing community ministries. The findings of these chapters provide follow-up information on the earlier publication of `Basic Steps Toward Community Ministry' (The Alban Institute, 1991), which detailed the initiation of thirty-two church-based social ministries through the Church and Community Project. Twenty-five years later we can report on these ministries, their successes and deficiencies, their frustrations and discoveries" -- Intro. p. [ix].

"Luther Snow asks simply that we refocus our half-full rather than half-empty realities, that we appreciate anew our gifts and capacities and those of our neighbours, that we connect those gifts to one another in creative combinations, and that we activate those connections to strengthen our congregations and communities". "The 'asset mapping' process Snow describes resonates with us both historically and theologically. The living church has always emphasized the importance of faithful stewardship, the full utilization of the gifts and talents of the people of God." "With its biblical and historical roots, congregational asset mapping is also related to contemporary developments in the secular community-building movement. In his role as an adjunct faculty member of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute at Northwestern University, Snow has worked with both rural and urban communities to help them discover and mobilize their strengths and resources". -- Foreword, p. vii.

"A large number of congregations are setting up church-based nonprofit organizations in order to operate community development or educational programs. Once formed, the nonprofit structure allows for new opportunities for accessing additional funding and drawing new collaborative partners, and volunteers into the ministry. [The author] outlines the step-by-step procedures for setting up a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization connected to a congregation using simple, easy-to-understand terminology and plenty of examples from churches that have already taken on this task." -- Inside front cover.
