"The College of Emmanuel and St. Chad in Saskatoon announces the appointments of Dr. William Harrison as Professor of Anglican Studies and Theology, and Rev. William A. Richards [United Church of Canada] as Professor of New Testament Language and Literature". "Donna Bomberry, Indigenous Ministries Co-ordinator of the Anglican Church of Canada, has assumed a position on the Board of the Indigenous Theological Training Institute."
"Dr. Walter Deller has been appointed principal and professor at the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad in Saskatoon. Mr. Deller has a Masters of Divinity degree from the Toronto School of Theology, and a doctorate in theology from Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto".
The College of Emmanuel and St. Chad has established a community-based theological education program to improve accessibility to training programs throughout the ecclesiastical province of Rupert's Land.
Bishop Wallace, Chancellor of the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad informed the bishops of a proposal to close the school down effective May 31, 2005. He said that the college has been struggling financially for some time and that it had become evident that it could no longer run on a deficit budget. Notice (ending on May 31, 2005) had been given to the staff of the college a year earlier. Bishop Wallace indicated that the college had implemented several strategies in an attempt to enable it to continue operating. Its recent Capital Campaign had been one such venture. He concluded saying. "clearly for financial reasons the college is going to have to fold".
Archbishop Hutchison agreed that it was a difficult situation, and then suggested that it did bring up questions for consideration about theological education. For example, how many colleges are required ? and what programs should be offering ? He said unless those issues were seriously considered there would be other colleges facing the same situation as the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad. The Primate offered his commiseration to Bishop Wallace.
That this House send a message of regret and consolation to Dr. Walter Deller, principal of the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad, and to staff, students, alumni and friends on the immanent closing of the college. We regret the closing of the college and give thanks for many years of service to the Church." CARRIED Res.#HB-05-04-01
