"This groundbreaking addition to Alban's acclaimed `Money, Faith, and Lifestyle Series' creates a mosaic of what is happening -- and could happen -- in American Jewish and Christian congregations to cultivate in young people a deep and lasting commitment to giving and serving. Based on a two-year project by the Search Institute, a nonprofit research and education organization that specializes in the healthy development of children and adolescents, `Growing Up Generous' recognizes and highlights the roles of various congregational leaders (not only youth leaders) in shaping the attitudes of young people". -- inside front cover.

"'The Millennials' Who are they ? They're today's youth generation, born in the 1980s and coming of age in the early years of this new millennium. What are they like ? Using the data collected and interpreted by Reginald Bibby, Canada's leading expert on religious trends, in his bestselling 2001 book 'Canada's Teens: Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow', the authors point out some important discoveries. In some ways today's youth are very different from previous generations -- more responsible, more conservative, more concerned about the future, more materialistic, and certainly more saturated by the media. In other ways they're like young people of any era -- they love music and value friends highly, and they are concerned about justice, eager to change society, and (although they may not admit it) longing for admission into the adult world. In this book, veteran youth workers David Overholt and James Penner 'soul search' this fascinating generation, helping adults to understand the spiritual, social and personal side of youth today and offering creative ways to apply their findings to programs that fit teens' needs and aspirations". -- back cover.

"It seems Rap music and musicians are everywhere. This is not an attack on rap music as a genre, but a look at some of its darker sides and a discussion on some of the ways it gets into our children's soul. Parents everywhere need to know what our children are hearing". -- p. 2.
"If you walked into our shelter, you'd see roomfuls of kids who have lived in -- and yearn to escape -- the dark, hopeless world romanticized in America's video music culture. These kids know what death and suicide are like, because most of them have seen it, up close". -- p. 6.
Author is a Roman Catholic nun and "president of Covenant House, a shelter for homeless and runaway teenagers in New York City". -- p. 2.

"AIDS is not asking anything new of us; rather, it is confronting us with the necessity of becoming more fully the kind of people we have been called to be. One might ask, 'Why should the church respond ?' Despite all the so-called openness about sexuality, young people receive little help in understanding themselves as sexual beings in a Christian context. What they have most often had from the church is pronouncements about what they should not do, with little emphasis on a positive response to God's goodness. We hope that this program will give you a place to begin a healthy conversation about sexuality and faith. The first version of 'Youth Ministry in the Age of AIDS' was written in 1988 and reviewed by a number of groups in the church for accuracy and appropriateness. Since that time, much has changed. Facts about AIDS are taught in most schools and are widely available on the Internet and from many community agencies. The original work, aimed primarily at high school youth, is now intended for both junior and senior high-age children." -- Intro.
