"Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, emerged from his Dec. 6 [2012] meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury-elect, Justin Welby, feeling 'very optimistic about his leadership'. The visit which took place at Auckland Castle, in County Durham, England, was part of Hiltz' annual visit to Lambeth Palace and the Anglican Communion office. Hiltz also met with Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, who retired on Dec. 7 [2012]". [Text of entire article.]

Archbishop Ndungane believes that the Anglican Communion needs reforming and that the head of the Communion should be chosen from among the primates or even all bishops. He also said that "the Church of England needs to be `liberated' from the notion that it is the Anglican Communion. "His experience at last year's Lambeth Conference reinforced his view that the conference needs reforming. `We (almost) live in the 21st century and you cannot bring 750 bishops to a conference as if it were a tea party with a host and hostess marshalling us around,' Archbishop Ndungane said. `It's got to have structures in place for doing business if we want the mind of the communion to be expressed'."

A personal reflection by the Bishop of St. Germans on his generally very positive experience of Lambeth 1998. Does make interesting observation about corporate memory and working behaviour when he states: "There was no review of the resolutions from the 1988 Lambeth Conference. The lack of attention to them reveals the modesty of the authority of those we passed this time. It was evident that few bishops seemed to have read any reports or resolutions of previous Lambeth Conferences at all. It was as if we were doing everything from scratch. In the sub-section on euthanasia of which I formed part we certainly were, and woefully under-resourced to do so. But rarely did any Lambeth document quote any previous Lambeth report or resolution. Vatican documents, be contrast, are a sort of patchwork quilt of previous papal utterances and encyclicals. Suddenly I found myself sympathetic to the Curia. Anglicans publish endless reports and documents, but seem to do little to connect them. This Synod can be as bad, reinventing wheels with monotonous regularity".

The Archbishops' Commission on the Organisation of the Church of England, also known as the Turnbull Commission, published its report in September [1995]. The report, entitled "Working as One Body", has called for a complete restructuring of the Church at a national level and proposed the setting up of a new executive Council with far-reaching powers. The roles of the Archbishops would be strengthened in this new set-up.

Text
That this Synod record its high privilege in and deep appreciation of the visit of His Grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate of All England. We tender to the present holder of the Mother See of our Anglican Communion, a Prelate no less illustrious than any of his predecessors, a man of full humanity, deep piety, and clear vision, one who in a few short days has endeared himself to all by his charming personality and generous friendship, our sincerest thanks for his inspiring sermon and other addresses; and further ensure him of our enduring memory of the practical help, unstintingly supplied at great sacrifice during centuries, by the Church of England, and pledge ourselves, by the Grace of God, to be proud of and ever true to our heritage. CARRIED unanimously in both Houses.
