The Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) held a Mission and Evangelism Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, from 12-15 April 2004. It "heard a wide range of views from across Africa with delegates sharing their experiences of mission work. It reviewed how African evangelism had been successful and challenged itself to analyse its current efforts and weaknesses. At the conference's close a series of proposals were finalised in a summary document after a succession of increasingly focused group debates". "`Every Anglican an Evangelist' is a feasible objective but must commence with `Every Clergy member an evangelist', the summary stated, adding that a key to success would be a realignment in the role of theological colleges". The conference also talked about African specific problems. "IN particular the report highlighted tribalism. Many delegates expressed great concern that tribal considerations influenced the election of bishops and clergy, and said that any cultural practices that were inconsistent with God's word -- and therefore evangelism -- should be discarded." "Reports were also presented on the Church in various African provinces and stories shared showing the excellent work of laity and clergy in all aspects of Church work, especially efforts for peace and reconciliation in Burundi and Rwanda".

Samuel Ajayi Crowther was born around 1807 in Yorubaland, southwestern Nigeria. He was enslaved at the age of 14 but liberated from a slave ship and taken to Sierra Leone where he became an Anglican in 1825. "He took the names of an eminent English cleric, Samuel Crowther, while keeping his Yoruba name. That was a portent for the future. For though later on he seemed the quintessential Black Victorian, cherishing the English language, Samuel Ajayi Crowther was to become convinced that Africans must hear the Word of God and praise Him in their own tongues". In 1843 the Bishop of London ordained Crowther, making him Sierra Leone's first Anglican priest of African origin. He eventually produced a Yoruba translation of the Bible after 45 years of work. Crowther was a member of the mission team from Sierra Leone that evangelized Nigeria. In 1864 Crowther was consecrated the first black bishop in the Anglican Communion in Canterbury Cathedral. "He was deeply respected by many of the Muslim potentates of the Upper Niger region because he preferred to enter into dialogue with them, rather than preaching at them or denigrating Islam". After 1880 new missionary politics sidelined Crowther. He resigned from his role on the Niger Committee in 1890 and died in 1891. After his death, there was not an African diocesan bishop in Nigeria again until the 1950s. "The school was [Crowther's] principal starting point for students to learn both the Word of God and the basic ingredients of earning a living". "With a sensitivity more of the 20th century than of the 19th, he envisioned a Church that was deeply African in governance and spirituality, and richly Anglican in doctrine and worship. That foundation and vision flourished over the years to such an extent that, today, the Church of Nigeria is one of the fastest growing and one of the most dynamic Churches of the Anglican Communion, with some 90 dioceses and an estimated 17 or more million members".

"[By] Jehu J. Hanciles".
Includes bibliographical references and index.
"This book by Jehu Hanciles, who is himself an immigrant from Sierra Leone, could not be timelier. He argues that the rapid exchange of ideas, investments, people, and products that we know as globalization is having a very surprising effect. While we Americans often think of it as bringing Coca Cola to the world and exporting factory jobs to lower-wage nations, Hanciles argues that globalization is propelling a great increase in personal mobility, and that people on the move are bringing their own ideas and outlook with them. The great majority of the new immigrants to the United States are Christians, Hanciles informs us, but their faith is not merely another American cultural import. It partakes of their unique views of life and of God's work in the world. The United States would be moving much more rapidly toward a post-Christian status, he argues, were it not for these fresh infusions of believers. With a focus on the hundreds of African immigrant congregations arising in our cities and suburbs, Hanciles gives us an intimate look at the new missions movement happening in our land. It will change the character of American Christianity, he insists, and perhaps, of Christianity worldwide". -- Foreword.
