"We have written this book to go hand in hand with 'Lights that Shine: How Christians can fulfil their call to mission'. .... We have written 'Brushing up on Believing' to partner 'Lights that Shine', because the more deeply we believe the more brightly our lights will shine. .... In this book there are two sections, one on the basic Christian doctrines and the other on the Lord's Prayer. .... We have included material at the end of each chapter with questions for discussion, prayers and meditations". -- Intro.

"With a Foreword by the Archbishop of Canterbury".
"The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book".
"First published in Great Britain by Fount Paperbacks, London in 1990 in association with Faith Press". -- verso of t.-p.
The author "makes us recognize the perennial interdependence of word, image, symbol and ritual within Christian culture. He shows us how the creative religious imagination can enhance Christian living, and he almost persuades us that the ;post-orthodoxy' of our own times can strengthen rather than threaten our Christian identity. 'Being free to choose', he tells us, 'can be, possibly just is, more favourable to sincere and integrated Christianity that compulsion, although it gives us more to do'." -- Foreword.
"In this book the focus of that mystery, and the truth about our relations with other people, is the Eucharist". -- back cover.

A collection of addresses given by Archbishop Robert Runcie on his 30 August - 18 September 1985 tour of Canada.
"The 1985 tour by [Robert Runcie] the Archbishop of Canterbury, from one coast of Canada to the other and from the extreme southern region of Ontario to the most northerly parish community in the Yukon .... Perhaps even more demanding than the vast distances and packed agenda, was the number of public addresses on a large number of subjects, for the most part chosen by his hosts. Before he retired as Primate, Archbishop [Edward W.] Scott requested some sort of collection of those addresses be undertaken, not simply for archival purposes but because of the depth and breadth of their messages. The task was turned over to me as I was the only national staff person to have been privileged to accompany Archbishop Runcie on the entire tour. I enlisted the aid of a skilled journalist who also happens to be a journalist -- Bob Bettson, formerly religion writer for the Calgary Herald and member of the editorial board of the Calgary diocesan newspaper 'The Sower', now on the editorial staff of the United Church Observer. I provided Bob with copies and tapes of the addresses and press clippings from daily newspapers across the country, so that he would include remarks made at what seemed to be innumerable media conferences." -- Foreword, p. [7]-8.

"Previous ed. has title: Common sense Christianity". -- verso of t.-p.
"The first edition of this book, published by Wood Lake Books, proved to be a useful resource for people who wanted to know about the Christian faith, but who had no previous religious background. These people didn't want to be 'converted'. They wanted to be informed. Their feedback has been appreciated and a number of changes have improved the present volume as a result. I trust this new edition will be equally useful to as many folk". -- Foreword.

"This is a controversial book both by nature and by design. It could not be otherwise, for it is in part an attempt to answer the question most often put to me after twelve years as religion editor of the largest newspaper in the country [the Toronto Star]. That is: 'As a former Anglican priest and professor of theology, with more than a decade's experience reporting on and discussing religious issues in the mass media, what do you yourself believe' ?" -- Intro., p.[1].

"In the Anglican Church in our time, and in other denominations as well, we are facing multiple layers of crisis. We may choose to see these as opportunities or as threats, but even those of use who are resisting know that we are in a whirlwind and that everything is changing around us. I believe that this is a time of great potential. I believe that there is a polishing of the faith, in effect, and that we will see more clearly through the lens of Christianity when it is completed. I also believe that Christianity has a contribution to offer in the discussion of the meaning of life, but we need to formulate our conversation in ways that revisit some old ideas and take seriously the new knowledge that is unfolding in science and biblical research". -- Intro., p. 7.
"In the physical universe, there is intrinsic goodness; in change, wisdom; in suffering, wholeness; in error, compassion. Redemption lies not in resolving the paradoxes, but in engaging creatively with them in the spirit of Jesus Christ". -- back cover.
