Anglican Church of Canada : Response to the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches : Re: Faith and Order paper number 111 : Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry
"The gathering of the Anglican response to B.E.M. was undertaken by the Inter-Church and Inter-Faith Relations Committee of General Synod in consultation with the Ministry Committee and the Doctrine and Worship Committee. Following its approval by Inter-Church and Inter-Faith Relations in November, 1985 the National Executive Council agreed to forward this statement to the World Council of Churches as the 'initial response' of the Anglican Church of Canada". -- p. 21.

The Primate welcomed Archbishop McAdoo, Archbishop of Dublin, and invited him to address the House. Archbishop McAdoo spoke on the Lima Report and the ARCIC Report. He said that many of the basic concepts of the ARCIC Report are evident in the Lima Report, with the exception of Koinonia and the concept of substantial agreement.
Following Archbishop McAdoo's address, he joined in conversation with the Bishops, responding to questions and elaborating on some of the areas touched upon in his address.
The Primate thanked Archbishop McAdoo for being present at the meeting of the House and for sharing his expertise in this important area.
Text
That Archbishop McAdoo's address on the Final Report of the Anglican/Roman Catholic International Commission be circulated to the members of the House. CARRIED #2-11-83

"The statement published here marks a major advance in the ecumenical journey. The result of a fifty-year process of study and consultation, this text on baptism, eucharist and ministry represents the theological convergence that has been achieved, through decades of dialogue, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Over one hundred theologians met in Lima, Peru, in January 1982, and recommended unanimously to transmit this agreed statement -- the Lima text -- for the common study and official response of the churches. They represented virtually all the major church traditions: Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, Methodist, United, Disciples, Baptists, Adventists and Pentecostal. The churches' response to this agreed statement will be a vital step in the ecumenical process of 'reception'." -- back cover.

"Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) remains a seminal text for the churches and the ecumenical movements. Since its publication in 1982, this World Council of Churches Faith and Order convergence document has been translated into more than 40 languages, has remained an ecumenical best-seller, and has been the basis of many official agreements between churches. This vibrant collection of essays, from a wide range of confessional and regional perspectives, explores the continuing legacy of BEM. Articles trace the influence of BEM -- and the challenge it continues to pose today -- in areas such as worship, ecclesiology, the churches' social witness, and local parish life. But critical questions are also raised: how far have the churches acted upon the agreements signalled in BEM ? Was there full participation in the BEM process in all regions of the world ? And what does the churches' experience with BEM tell us about the next stage of the ecumenical journey ?" -- back cover.
"[M]ost of the contributors -- who wrote of course as individual theologians from various traditions -- were invited to reflect on the legacy of BEM for a volume dedicated to the 80th birthday of Lukas Vischer, Director of Faith and Order during most of the long process of envisioning and producing the text. In this sense this volume may be regarded as a Festschrift for Lukas Vischer, offered in tribute to his commitment to the cause of the visible unity of the church". -- Preface.

"Following the good results of the first three meetings of the Forum 1978-1980 (Reports in Faith and Order Paper No. 107, Geneva 1981), we were encouraged to hold a Fourth Forum in March 1985. The publication and wide discussion of the Faith and Order convergence text on 'Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry' provided a test case in which to investigate more concretely than before the relations between bilateral and multilateral dialogues. The outcome of this fourth Forum as summarized in the following report, has confirmed our concern and hope that both forms of ecumenical endeavour render a common contribution to the advancement of closer fellowship between the churches on their way to the goal of visible unity in one faith and one eucharistic fellowship". -- Preface, p. "The special significance and achievement of the meeting in Madrid consists in the fact that the Standing Commission clarified and planned the work of Faith and Order until 1989, the next meeting of the Plenary Commission. Thus, clear perspectives for the implementation of our programmes during the next two years were established. The present Minutes contain the reports presented to the Madrid meeting and the reports and decisions from the meeting itself. The Report of the Potsdam consultation of United/Uniting Churches will be published as a Faith and Order Paper". -- Preface.

"If the divided churches are to achieve the visible unity they seek in the ecumenical movement, one of the most important prerequisites is undoubtedly that they should agree about baptism, eucharist and ministry. Not surprisingly, therefore, the Faith and Order Commission has always devoted a great deal of its attention to these three themes. There have been very few of its conferences at which one or other of these themes has not been been at the centre of discussion. But where have all these efforts brought us ? Is it already possible to speak of a common mind ? The three reports presented here are an attempt to summarize the measure of agreement already achieved in the Faith and Order movement. They are the fruit of a process of study extending over a number of years. Several consultations have been held to clear up certain specific points. The resultant texts have been thoroughly discussed by the Faith and Order Commission a number of times, most recently at Accra, Ghana, in the summer of 1974. They are now submitted to the churches for consideration and comment." -- Preface.
