The text of the present book has been translated by Father Walter van de Putte, C.S.Sp., and carefully revised by the undersigned [Henry J. Koren]. "This book is based on a series of lectures which I gave at a Summer School at St. Augustine's College, Canterbury, in July 1964. .... What began as a review of the future of the Anglican Communion has turned into a sort of crystallisation of my twelve years' experience as a missionary in South India". -- Foreword.
"It has been taken for granted that the future of the Anglican Communion must see a closer cohesion between the member churches; and the Toronto Conference, commending mutual interdependence, foreshadowed a centralised organisation as the means if not the end. In this lively and forthright book, Professor Anthony Hanson warns us note to judge the Anglican Communion by the Church of England ... With a sharper vision of what anglicanism is, he sees -- and vigorously advocates -- a quite different future for it. It is a disturbing and exciting future, on a path which leads beyond anglicanism; it may well be that we are already travelling it, away from Toronto. The author draws convinving evidence from his own moving experience as a presbyter in South India, within a Church that claims no exclusive anglicanism but is yet holy and catholic". -- back cover.

Text
That this General Synod notes with satisfaction that the Bishops of the Anglican Communion, by resolution No. 48 (b) made at the Lambeth Conference of 1968, asked the Churches and Provinces of the Anglican Communion to re-examine their relation to the Church of South India with a view to entering into full communion with that Church.
And learns with regret that no change in the relations of the Anglican Church of Canada with the Church of South India has occurred since 1962 and no change is recommended by the Interchurch Relations Committee.
And therefore expresses its desire that full communion be established with the Church of South India at the earliest possible time, and asks the House of Bishops, in consultation with the National Executive Council, and the Inter-Church Relations Committee, to re-examine promptly the relations of the Anglican Church of Canada with the Church of South India, with a view to the establishment of full communion with that Church. "We transmit herewith the report of the delegation from our Church to the Church of South India, together with an interim report of of Theological Committee, commending them earnestly to our Church for study. .... the subject of these reports is one of the greatest complexity, and equal consequence, we feel, for the future life of the Body of Christ. How can we, as wise statesmen and faithful stewards, order our relationships with the Church of South India, a Church in being which confronts us with a new patten of unity ? This is the question which prompted the visit in the first place, and to which these reports are addressed. Out relationships with the Church of South India pose difficult problems because that Church itself, at the moment, does not fit easily into accepted patterns and formulas. It has deliberately enclosed anomalies; it has deliberately accepted a way of life for itself which creates difficulties, yet which promises a new kind of unity based on what the Church holds to be the essential secrets of its life". -- p. vii.

"First Edition, August 1947. Reprinted November 1947". -- verso of t.-p.
"As will be seen, this letter has been written from a detached and juridical point of view, and is designed to deal objectively with certain matters about which misunderstandings are frequent, in the hope that fears which spring from these misunderstandings may be allayed thereby. In particular it sets out again the interim policy which will given the official relations of the Church of England to the South India Church until further order is taken. I had had the opportunity of consulting the diocesan bishops of England and Wales in this matter, and am able to say that they endorse the interim policy as set out in paragraphs 7 and 8 of this letter". -- Foreword.
Paragraph 7 begins: "The interim position, then, is this. Since the Church of South India is not a part of the Anglican Communion, no member of it can, by virtue of his membership of that Church, claim any rights in the Church of England". -- p. 8.
