Toronto -- Finding ways "to share the story of Jesus Christ today" must become a central organizing principle for the next decade, a national body of the Anglican Church says.
The church's Program Committee, meeting here today, called on Archbishop Michael Peers, the Primate of Canada, to assume a major role in inspiring the Church's engagement in the Decade of Evangelism, and vowed to reorganize its own work along similar principles.
The Primate, acting with a small group, will support efforts at evangelism that are already underway, and inspire the growth of new efforts. "We see the Primate's role as encouraging, facilitating and challenging the church in its work of sharing the story of Jesus Christ," according to Michael Rowe, a member of the committee's working group which drafted the statement.
"There are conversations about sharing Jesus Christ happening all over the place," notes Peter Elliott, another committee member, "not just in the Anglican Church of Canada, but ecumenically and around the world."
"We want to help those people to connect with each other and learn from each other," adds Tracy Fitzpatrick, "and draw others into the conversation."
The committee has also called for the formation of a staff working group focused on evangelism to help all Program areas collaborate in support of the Decade. Both the staff group and the Program Committee itself are asked to commit themselves to "live the journey" by modelling in their own work and lives the new emphasis on evangelism.
