The Upper House concurs in Message L-52 of the Lower House. (See p. 67.)
That provided that, during the balance of 1967, all possible economies are effected in the operation of the Department of Literature and Supplies, including staff reductions, inventory disposal and writeoffs, and management reorganization so that service to the Church public will be continued on a more nearly self-supporting basis; and provided further that the department be and is hereby directed to operate at a profit for 1968 and succeeding years, the National Executive Council, acting with and on the advice of the Board of Finance, be authorized to continue the operation of the department, or to curtail its operation if interim reports indicate that a profitable operation is not realizable by December 31, 1968. CARRIED in both Houses.
Rev. Maxwell B. Parker is returning to the parochial ministry after 13 years as director of the department of literature and supplies of the Anglican Church of Canada here. He will assume duties as rector of Holy Trinity Church, Burford, near Brantford, Ontario, June 1.
Dr. Parker was born at Dorchester, Ontario, in 1904 and graduated from the University of Western Ontario and Huron College. Following his ordination to the priesthood by Archbishop David Williams at London, Ontario, in 1930, he served a number of parishes in the Diocese of Huron. [H]e obtained his M.A. at Columbia University, New York, in 1940, when he was appointed rector of St. Luke's Church, London, Ontario. In 1946 he became registrar-bursar and lecturer at Huron College, taking over his present post in 1954.
Rt. Rev. G.N. Luxton, Bishop of Huron, will induct Dr. Parker into the Burford parish on June 9.
Dr. Parker married Helen McNichol Smith of Hensall, Ontario, in 1934 and they have two sons, Dr. John, Toronto, and Hugh James, a post-graduate student at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.
That this House recognizes the major contribution made by the Department of Literature and Supplies, together with the officers of the Anglican Book Centre, to the work of preparing for and recording the Anglican Congress of 1963. In publishing the preparatory books, the official record, and now the post-congress publication, Dr. Parker and his associates ministered skilfully and enthusiastically to the life of the Anglican Communion, and this House takes pride in the effectiveness and spirit of their service.
