Memorial from the Executive Committee of the Synod of the Diocese of Kootenay to the General Synod of the Church of England in Canada.
"Whereas by the provisions of Canon VIII, section 23, a clergyman of seventy years of age and upward, who has not served forty years in Holy Orders, is not entitled to a pension from the General Synod Pension Fund unless medical evidence of his physical or mental unfitness is submitted;
And whereas such provisions are in Missionary Dioceses, unquestionably hard on the individual and inimical to the proper maintenance of parochial life and activity;
The Executive Committee of the Synod of the Diocese of Kootenay doth hereby petition the General Synod of the Church of England in Canada to take steps to amend the provision of the Canon in question to meet cases where it is shown to be impossible for such aged clergymen to obtain adequate stipendiary work."
Signed, Walter Kootenay, Chairman; A.G.R. Prickard, Secretary.
Dated at Nelson, B.C., June 4th, 1937.
The above memorial was submitted to the Synod for consideration by the Bishop of Kootenay.
That the memorial of the Diocese of Kootenay be referred to the Pension Board for consideration and report to the Executive Council. CARRIED in both Houses.
