Charles James Stewart (1775-1837) was educated at All Soul's College, Wigtonshire, Scotland and at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, England. Ordained deacon in 1798 and priest in 1799. Appointed rector of Orton Longueville, 1798-1807 and travelling missionary in Quebec and Ontario for the Society of the Propagation of the Gospel, 1819-1825. Bishop of Quebec, 1826-1837.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of a notebook with writings on natural and modern history, poetry, laws of government and miscellaneous writings. Copies of letters to Bishop Hobart and the Reverend J. Reid.

Administrative History
Clergy Reserves were lands set aside in Upper Canada and Lower Canada under the Constitutional Act of 1791, to support and maintain the Church of England in Canada. One-eighth of all lands granted were reserved to the Church of England in Canada. The MacNab-Morin administration passed a measure of secularization in 1854, ending the Clergy Reserves.

Fonds consists of a collection of printed copies or extracts of correspondence, papers, and reports regarding Clergy Reserves, 1791-1854. Includes a circular, dated 1839, addressed: To a Christian Public and signed by many clergymen from Eastern Ontario defending the establishment of the Church of England in Canada and its rights to the Clergy Reserves (M76-16).

Administrative History
The Rt. Rev. Jacob Mountain, first bishop of Quebec (1793-1825) was born in Thwaite, County of Norfolk, England. He received his B.A. in 1774 and M.A. in 1777 from Caius College, Cambridge, and was ordained deacon in 1774 and priest in 1780. Mountain was a member of the Executive Council of Quebec and an author.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of copies of personal letters written by Bishop Jacob Mountain, his wife Elizabeth Wale Kentish and Mrs. Pretyman, wife of the Bishop of Lincoln regarding Quebec diocesan affairs from 1794-1812. Letters are arranged in files by T.R. Millman. Ipswich and East Suffolk Record Office numbering designations have been maintained.

Jehoshaphat Mountain (1745-1817), ordained deacon in 1778 and priest in 1779. Rector of Peldon, near Colchester, 1782-1793 and Bishop's commissary, 1797. Succeeded the Reverend L.J.B.N. Veyssiere at Three Rivers in 1800. After an incumbency of less than a year, served at the parish of Montreal for the remainder of his life.

Fonds consists of a letter that describes Jehosaphat's opinion on the conduct of different persons of different religions to a Jew named Moses Hart.
