Charles Caleb Cotton (1775-1848) was born at Eton, Bucks, England on July 31, 1775. Graduated from Oxford, joined the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and was appointed the first missionary at St. Armand, Quebec for that society, 1804-1808.

Jack Peter Francis (1918- ) received his B.Com. from the University of Toronto in 1942 and did post-graduate work there in 1944. Shortly after graduation, he entered the Federal Department of Labour and became Director of its Research Branch in 1961. In 1966 he joined the Department of Manpower and Immigration and became the Assistant Deputy Minister (Planning) for the Department of Regional Economic Expansion in 1969. Francis was the Archivist of the Diocese of Ottawa and now serves as a volunteer. He has an interest in church history and has written several papers on the subject.

Fonds consists of personal and official correspondence as well as official documents of the Roe and Jarvis families, arranged chronologically. Included is a file of miscellaneous documents and letters belonging and relating to several different church figures.

Ranna Cossitt (1744-1815) studied theology in England and began his ministry with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel at Claremont. Ministered in Sydney, Cape Breton and joined the colony's Executive Council, 1786-1805. Inducted as rector in Yarmouth in 1807.

Fonds consists of letters from Cossitt to William Morice, secretary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and a copy of a crown grant.
In 1927, the General Synod of the Church of England in Canada appointed an Archives Committee to assist the Registrar in locating, listing and collecting material of historical value.
In 1943, the Archives Committee recommended that each Diocesan and Provincial Synod send copies of Synod Journals and other valuable historical publications to the Archives Committee to be placed in the Church Historical Reference Library. This was the beginning of the diocesan and provincial synod collection held at the General Synod Archives.
The Anglican Church of Canada is divided up into thirty dioceses and four ecclesiastical provinces. Each diocese and ecclesiastical province are separately incorporated and has its own synod.
