The 8th King's Regiment: A curiosity in its annals; the remains of a non-commissioned officer in this regiment, killed at the taking of York (Toronto) in 1813, are accidentally discovered at Toronto in 1894 and are honorably cared for by the officers and men of the same regiment, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, after a complete oversight, duly explained, of more than eighty years.

"Many of these meditations for the Lenten season are personal in nature. .... Our incarnational faith proclaims that the universal is known through the particular. God is known through Jesus Christ - incarnate, died, resurrected and ascended. The gospel is incarnate, literally in the flesh, like the church, in a particular time, place, and context. For me, the gospel has been made known in this particular place, through these people, in our time. I hope to share this good news with you". -- Preface.

"The lives of prisoners are parables of Lent. I was brought to my knees in mourning and repentance before the Lord. And since my life is barren of the usual pleasures, it is a type of fasting. This is a period of building up, of learning, and of service. My rebirth during these past years is of God and is from the depths of my own soul and life. Years from now the day will come when I will walk free from this place and experience another kind of rebirth. My time here in prison is my own Lent, and in-between period of growth and repentance. .... This written for prisoners and free people alike. Your life may be like mine, or very different. But ours is a common path of discovery: a path of repentance, sanctification, and the power of God's love. If we walk in different shoes, that does not lessen our empathy or our compassion. We are brothers and sisters, journeying together". -- p. 5-6.

"This booklet is a day by day response to the readings set for the eucharists of Lent. The intent is to spend some time reading and praying through the psalm and the lessons for each day, using the meditation and the collect as a launching point for prayer and further spiritual reflection. These devotions pick up the themes of Lent: fasting, prayer, devotion to God, forgiveness, denial of self, and service, among others". -- Intro., p. [3].
