"[W]hat difference does radically contextual theological education make once the student begins ministry in the parish ? That is the question this book addresses. Drawing on his tenure as a member of the faculty of Tamilnadu Theological Seminary in Madurai, India, the author conducted extensive interviews with several persons both during their time and as students and at several points in their ministry over the next 15 years. He has supplemented these stories with the results of a similar exercise he carried out with a number of his theological students in Britain. On this basis, he reflects on how, when and why contextual theological education does or does not prepare a person for effective ministry". -- back cover.
Contents: Foreword / Israel Selvanayagam -- A Personal Introduction -- The Training Experience at Tamilnadu -- Ministry to Prisoners: Learning from Experience -- Six Ministries in Tamilnadu -- Has TTS [Tamilnadu Theological Seminary] Made a Difference ? -- The West Midlands Course -- Seven Students from West Midlands -- Does It Make a Difference ? -- A Short Bibliography on Theological Education.

"Birmingham in England is a multi-racial and multi-religious city. Among its population are a considerable number of Muslims. A group of Muslims and Christians here has carried on a sustained dialogue for several years. Its members have not changed their faiths, but they have grown in community and understanding. The first part of the book presents a diary of their meetings and contacts. In the second part are reflections, on the basis of this experience of dialogue, on issues of faith, prayer and theology, and on the sensitivities involved as people meet across cultural boundaries" -- back cover.
Contents: Preface / A. Majhid Khan Qazi -- Background of the Encounter -- A Diary of the Encounter -- Reflections on the Encounter.

Notes
Positive review of this "refreshing study by a Canadian researcher, teaching in Nairobi" who "shows the way in which many African Christians are wrestling with the fundamental question of theology: who is Christ. She draws on oral interviews with avariety of Christians in Ghana, Uganda and Kenya, and six key theologians. There is a denominational balance -- Roman Catholic, Anglican, Protestant and Pentecostal; and women feature strongly: witness the two women theologians studied, Mercy Oduyoye (Methodist) and Anee Nasimiyu Wasike (RC). The men are John Pobee and J. Mugambi (Anglican), Benezet Bujo and Jean-Marc Ela (RC)."
