"Edited by Sven Oppegaard [and] Gregory Cameron on behalf of The Lutheran World Federation [and] Anglican Consultative Council".
"The present publication contains reports and agreements achieved by Anglican-Lutheran dialogues at regional and international levels. These documents have all been published separately before, and the international agreements have also been collected in `Growth in Agreement', volumes I and II, published by the WCC, Geneva, in 1984 and 2000. It is the first time, however, that this sequence of ecumenical texts, including main documents from regional developments, is collected for comprehensive reference and study". -- Editors' Preface.
"In no other bilateral relationships have so many agreements of church union been reached, and these agreements have in some cases been extended to include churches of the Reformed tradition. Despite the fact that these developments have become quite well known, the texts of many of the agreements have not been easily available. It is with great satisfaction, therefore, that the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran World Federation together present this collection of all the major Anglican-Lutheran agreements of the last thirty years. Having these documents in one volume also makes it easier to see the processes which led to their creation and to make cross references." -- Foreword.

"This bibliography, initially prepared for my own private use, includes material that relates to official church relations at the international and national levels [with the exception of South India] and for the most part only materials in German or English, with a weighting towards English. Material on theological or ecclesiastical influence of one tradition on the other is for the most part not included. Even within these limits, gaps undoubtedly exist, Some texts listed here do not involve Anglican-Lutheran relations in a strict sense, but relations involving churches with a significant Anglican background (e.g. the Church of South India) or a significant and internally independent Lutheran component (e.g. the Evangelical Church in Germany). Some relate to church union discussions involving more than Lutheran and Anglican churches (e.g. the East Africa Church Union Consultations of the early 1960's)." -- p. [1].

"[I]s communion focused on baptism the ecumenical way forward ? Is such a baptismal communion in fact all we really need ? ... The project had three stages, each discernible in this volume. Basic for the[project is a study paper produced by the Institute for Ecumenical Research, Strasbourg, at the request of the Department for Theology and Studies of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) ... This study paper seeks both to lay out a particular understanding of baptism and the church as communion and to outline and analyze the various ecumenical issues raised by the interconnection of the concepts 'baptism' and 'communion'. After discussion within the LWF, this study paper served as a point of reference for the second stage of the project, a consultation sponsored by the Strasbourg Institute in Hvittorp, Finland, in October 1996. This consultation was designed to be ecumenical, analyzing the topic from various angles. The various contributors were asked to comment on various themes, ranging from abstract questions of ecclesiology to particular questions of practice in situations where baptism and communion have become especially live topics. The third stage is the book you now have before you, the publication of the study paper and of the contributions to the Hvittorp consultation, revised by the authors following the discussions". -- Intro.

"Root and Saarninen have offered in this collection of essays some helpful perspectives for refocusing baptismal discussions amongst and between the various Christian communions, some of which have been neglected or ignored in previous studies. The effort is a worthwhile contribution as much for its clarification of the areas of disagreement and differences as for elucidating, for instance, Baptist and Pentecostal understandings of baptism as it affects ecclesiology. All of this is presented in light of recent ecumenical agreements and the prayer of Christians from diverse backgrounds for the unity of the catholic Church".
"The book's introduction suggests and summarizes the consultation's conclusion. Root and Saarinen write that `No ecumenical panacea is to be found in baptism, but a clear recognition of our common baptism should force us to rethink the nature of our unity and division'. (p. 3) ... The study paper and the five foundational essays responding to it should appeal to all students of sacramental initiation and ecumenism".

"This volume of essays seeks to provide 'unashamed' support for the proposed Concordat between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Episcopal Church, USA. ... Yet, for all this enthusiasm, and perhaps because of the seriousness of this enthusiasm, our unashamed backing of the proposal does not translate into uncritical support." -- Intro., p. 1.
