This consultation was designed to be ecumenical, analyzing the topic from various angles. The various contributors were asked to comment on various themes, ranging from abstract questions of ecclesiology to particular questions of practice in situations where baptism and communion have become especially live topics. - "Root and Saarninen have offered in this collection of essays some helpful perspectives for refocusing baptismal discussions amongst and between the various Christian communions, some of which have been neglected or ignored in previous studies. The effort is a worthwhile contribution as much for its clarification of the areas of disagreement and differences as for elucidating, for instance, Baptist and Pentecostal understandings of baptism as it affects ecclesiology. All of this is presented in light of recent ecumenical agreements and the prayer of Christians from diverse backgrounds for the unity of the catholic Church".
