"The 4th W.A. Visser 't Hooft Memorial Consultation was held at the Chateau de Bossey, near Geneva, Switzerland, from June 1 to 8, 1999. Following the lines of the three previous consultations, attention was focussed on matters related to the construction of a sustainable society. Participants reflected on the relationship among democracy, sustainablility and globalization. The main questions that oriented the dialogue concerned what should be done to put into action the agreements and conventions elaborated by the international community towards making a sustainable society. How should we move from these agreements and conventions into contracts that oblige nations and other international agencies to participate in actions favourable for environmental sustainablility ? What can churches and Christian communities contribute to the formulation and enforcement of democratic contracts ? This volume presents the main contributions made for the organization and debate of the consultation, as well as the final report agreed to by the participants." -- Preface, p. [vii].
