"The first edition of this book (published in November, 1962) had a preface in which I attempted to indicate the kind of book I had written. Since then, a number of things have happened in the unity field. Ideally, many parts of the book should be rewritten to bring it up to date again. This is for various reasons impractical at the moment, and it seems best, therefore, to replace the original preface with a fresh one in which I can note the more important developments during the past year. At the Anglican Congress in Toronto and the meetings at Huron College which preceded it, the Anglican Communion re-defined its essential ecumenical role. The document 'Mutual Responsibility and Interdependence in the Body of Christ', if acted upon by the several Anglican Churches, will be of creative importance." -- Author's Preface to the Second Edition.

The reviewer, Episcopal Bishop of North Dakota, is a great admirer of Allen's writing and ideas which resonates with his own experience with Alaskan Eskimo and Indian congregations. "Allen's works were republished in the early 1960s, and since then have attracted the interest of church leaders who see a strong contemporary need for reform of ministry. Basically the need is seen as a movement from ownership of ministry by a professional elite and captivity by a particular dominant culture to authentic expression, participation, and leadership of Christians locally gathered."

"The present selection from the writings of Roland Allen is designed as a companion volume to 'Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours ?' (first published 1912, revised 1927, and now in its fifth edition) and 'The Spontaneous Explosion of the Church and the Causes which Hinder it' (first published 1927, and now in its fourth edition), both also published by the World Dominion Press. It contains full or abbreviated texts of those of his other writings which, after careful study and discussion, seemed likely to be most useful. They have all been long out out of print, and most of them are now unobtainable even to persistent advertisers. Some editing has been necessary; but we have distinguished carefully between our work and Allen's". -- Foreword.

Paton -- Biographical Memoir / Alexander McLeish -- Pentecost and the World -- Non-Professional Missionaries -- Mission Activities Considered in Relation to the Manifestations of the Spirit -- St. Paul and the Judaizers: A Dialogue (being Part II of 'The Established Church') -- An Illustration from V.S. Azariah (being the final chapter of 'Educational Principles and Missionary Methods') -- The Case for Voluntary Clergy -- To the Parishioners of Chalfont St. Peter -- Bibliography -- Index of Bible References.

"The 1963 National Conference of Parish and People, held under the title 'The Mission of the People of God', was concerned to identify the mission of the Church to the world and to outline the most effective means for discharging the task. This report of the Conference consists of the papers read to its eight working parties, with brief summaries of the conclusions reached by the working parties after discussion. The speakers, all experts in their subjects covered a wide range of problems and brought new insights to bear on them; but the summaries of the conclusions are no less valuable, giving as they do the impact of the experts' views upon groups of parochial clergy and lay people" -- back cover.

"The question is not, 'What special and exceptional arrangements must we make in order to keep the traditional pattern of the ministry from breaking under the new strains ?' The question is, 'What pattern of ministry in the new circumstances into which God has thrust is, is the pattern of ministry which is proper to the nature of the Church as God's apostolic community in this world ?' This requires us to submit our traditional patterns, however hallowed by custom, to fresh scrutiny in the light of the Word of God, and in the light of a realistic understanding of the situation in which the Church's mission has to be discharged in the present day. When this is done it may well be that, in certain circumstances, the 'non-professional;', ministry will be seen to be the essential ministry, and that of the full-time professional the 'auxiliary' or 'supplementary'. That is, of course, only a possibility and by no means a certainty. What is certain is that the question of the form of the ministry can only be rightly answered on the basis of an understanding of the nature of the Church which is in conformity with the biblical doctrine of the Church as a missionary community". -- Preface.
