"The following chapters are a somewhat expanded version of the Warfield lectures given at Princeton Theological Seminary in March 1984. .... At the time I received the invitation I had recently written a small pamphlet entitled, 'The Other Side of 1984', and invitation to the British churches to a more forthright missionary encounter with contemporary British culture, and was much occupied with the resulting discussion. I therefore decided to use this invitation as an opportunity to develop more fully the message of that booklet. This book is the result". -- Preface.

"Lesslie Newbigin's book is an important contribution to the ongoing search within the ecumenical movement for an authentic expression of the meaning of the gospel and the mission of the church in the midst of a plurality of cultures and religions. Newbigin identifies the danger of relativism evident in a good deal of current discussion. He rejects the dichotomy between the 'world of facts' and the 'world of values'. He regrets the consequent attitude of timidity or of anxiety on the part of Christians, especially in the West. 'The Gospel in a Pluralist Society' is a call to renewed confidence in the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is an attempt to see 'how as Christians we can more confidently affirm our faith in the kind of intellectual climate' in which we find ourselves". -- Foreword.

"Healing has played a central role in the work of Christian mission, but it is many years since a major ecumenical study of the issues facing medical missions took place. Yet no part of the work of missions has more questions to meet at the present time. This small booklet records the beginning of an attempt to wrestle with some of them. At a meeting in 1962 the Commission on World Mission of the Lutheran World Federation decided to invite the Division of World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches to join with it in a study of medical missionary questions. ... A full record of the discussion at Tubingen is not available, but it has been decided to publish some of the preparatory and connected papers, along with the statement itself. The reader will note that the background papers really do not lead up to the Statement, though they form its background. The gap between the two is an indication of the fact that something happened at Tubingen which went beyond the preparatory material". -- Preface.
