This book "describes itself as a handbook 'for those who plan worship in parishes of the Episcopal Church', yet it is not a 'how-to-do-it' book. It seeks to expound the classic principles embodied in Anglican liturgical tradition, so that parish planners can make informed decisions about what they are doing". "Smith's book us addressed not so much to clergy as to members of parish liturgy committees, since he reminds us that worship in the Anglican tradition has always been seen as the joint work of priest and people". "This is an excellent book for everyone who plans Anglican worship in North America. The principles Smith cites apply equally well to those using the Canadian 'Book of Alternative Services', and those in the Lutheran tradition would find they need minimal adaptation."
The bulk of the text (pp. 54-701) contains in parallel columns the texts of successive revisions of the American Book of Common Prayer: The English Prayer Book of 1662 as it was in use in America in 1775, the Proposed Book of 1786, the First American Prayer Book of 1789 and its variants through 1871, the revision of 1892, that of 1928, and the present Prayer Book of 1979, including columns for both "traditional" and "contemporary" language for those services for which they exist.

"'Children in the Eucharist' formerly titled 'Children in the Parish Eucharist' [and published in 1987] is intended to help the Church honor, respect, and accept our children and their ministries as they, like adults, live into the Baptismal Covenant, specifically so at the altar. Children very rarely have a sense of belonging to the Christian community at worship because those who plan the Liturgy and those who furnish the liturgical space rarely think of children. The Holy Eucharist is indeed the liturgy of the baptized and 'the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other Feasts,' and as such all baptized Christians, regardless of age, should be present and take their place as full participants at the Lord's Table. .... 'Children in the Eucharist' is for persons who honestly accept children as humans and as people of God, for those who take Christian community seriously, and for those who are struggling with the presence of children in our midst". -- Intro.

"Anton Baumstark (1872-1948), a Roman Catholic lay liturgical scholar who flourished in the period between the two world wars, is best known for his application of the principles of comparative linguistics to liturgy. He saw liturgy as developing spontaneously according to certain laws, comparable to the development of languages."
Gregory Dix brought the eucharistic prayer of Addai and Mari to the attention of most of us who have ever heard of it by pointing out that it was an ancient eucharistic prayer which did not contain the words of institution. Since then it has provoked a good deal of scholarly discussion.
