"Every ministry aims for social transformation. Some focus on the transformation of the individual, some on the transformation of the society within which the individual exists. .... This book examines the leadership training provided by church-sponsored initiatives such as the Canadian Urban Training Project (popularly known as CUT), the Urban Core Support Network (UCSN), and GATT-Fly (now the Ecumenical Coalition on Economic Justice). Of these three, only ECEJ still survives -- yet the influence of their perspectives, their network, and their training methods continues to influence the churches' programs and policies, education for ordered ministry, and scores of smaller projects, all over the country." -- back cover.

"This book is both a record and a reflection on an extraordinary period in the life of the Canadian churches. .... In response to the spirit of renewal that followed from the Second Vatican Council, Roman Catholics in Canada were reaching out to experiment with new ecumenical relationships. While formal links through the Canadian Council of Churches seemed a long way off, Protestants were pushed by this surge of Catholic energy to build new models for peace and justice work. These became known as the interchurch coalitions, which the Protestant churches experienced as an opportunity to discover their own Social Gospel tradition (p. [5]). .... In this book we have asked the coalitions to tell their own story. Though the story may have a single person's name attached to it, it has been authorized by the coalition and circulated and revised by many people associated with the coalition's work. This was done to ensure the telling of a collective story rather than an individual one. These stories form Part One. .... We asked the writers of Part Two to read all of the stories and identify themes that emerged from the stories themselves. (p. 7) .... Another group of people [authors of Part Two], committed to supporting this justice work of the churches, has reflected on the strengths and weaknesses, similarities and differences among the stories. They have found much to praise, but also much to challenge (p. 8)". -- Intro.

"Meeting in Toronto -- where at the beginning of its existence the World Council of Churches articulated its nature and task -- the Board of Faith and Order sought to identify possible areas of reflection and action for work in the coming years. This was the first meeting of the newly elected Board, and thus it took time to reflect on the work undertaken in the period 1991-1998, on the issues identified by the Fifth World Conference on Faith and Order at Santiago de Compostela (1993) and the Plenary Commission in Moshi (1996). It deliberated on the themes which have emerged in bilateral dialogues, church union schemes, churches, ecumenical instruments, and in the Harare Assembly. The Board's task in Toronto was to draft recommendations for future work for the Programme Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and to further a number of constitutional matters. These minutes convey an account of the discussion and decisions of the Board". -- Preface, p. [1].

"From an ecumenical perspective the issue of political ethics has to do with the options which Christian people and the churches must take in their political witness, and with the biblical and theological foundations of such options. At least three questions pose themselves with particular urgency. First, can Christians and churches go beyond issuing general statements to making specific political judgements ? If it is agreed that they can, then on what bases may this be done ? Second, how do we adequately deal with the qualitatively new situation brought about by modern science and the technological revolution ? Technological developments tend to suppress the freedom of people, and the blessings of science are tragically mixed. How do we share in the benefits they bring without succumbing to their tyranny ? And third, how do we evaluate the awakening of people and the organization of people's movements, their determination to struggle against the forces of death and their search for a fuller, richer life ? Is the revolutionary option, for a while an inspiration for many, still possible and viable ? If it is not, what other options are there ?" -- Foreword, p. [vii].

"The distinguished career of the Rev. Dr. C. Douglas Jay provides the inspiration for `Theological Education in Canada'. These [9] essays grapple with the ideas, concerns and practical problems that have dominated the development of theological education in Canada over the past forty years. Theologians who have been directly involved share their own insight and expertise from such areas as philosophy, ecumenism, biblical criticism, and feminist ethical theory". -- back cover.
