"Adrian Hastings saw the main theme of Archbishop Runcie's primacy as the search for an appropriate Anglican style of authority. Avis himself wrote in 1986. 'Dissatisfaction with the Church of England centres on the question of authority'. The lust for infallible authorities seems to grow rather than be outgrown. And it is not only in Anglicanism, or the churches in general, that authority questions are of vital contemporary importance". -- Foreword.
In this book "I attempt to set up a dialogue between biblical and theological views of authority, on the one hand, and what the social sciences and management studies can teach us on the other. .... In this book I am wrestling with the three specific themes of liberating authority, therapeutic leadership and constructive conflict". -- Preface.
Contents: Foreword by the Archbishop of York / John Ebor i.e. Habgood -- Preface dated 4 April 1991 / Paul Avis -- Leadership and Authority in Today's Church -- The Power and the Glory -- Authority and Enlightenment -- The Thirst for Authority -- Sacred Status and the Bureaucratic Church -- Charisma and Spiritual Power -- Open Society: Open Church -- Learning for Leadership -- The Art of Leadership -- Harnessing Conflict -- Bibliography -- Index of Names.

"After more than thirty years in the Anglican ministry and a wide experience of teaching and preaching, it has become evident to me how specialised is the vocabulary we use in every corner of the Church's life. There are the 'jargon' words of theology and the words connected with the organisation and government of the Church, the Ministry, Church architecture and Church contents, Church music, the Church's Year, Church services, creeds and books. At the same time, many people find it difficult to understand just how the Church of England works, not only in its structure but also in its worship. This book tries to help with both problems." -- Preface.

Report of the Group set up by the Board for Social Responsibility and chaired by John Habgood, Archbishop of York
This report "is the Board for Social Responsibility's response to the two hundred and fifty replies it received to its earlier consultative document 'Goals for Our Future Society'. .... This study seeks to identify core values which have to be preserved, but which still permit a variety of social programmes and ways of life. It finds these core values in the idea of 'persons in community'. Persons are valuable in themselves, but only truly 'become themselves' in relationship with others. But who generates our social values and how are these communicated ? [This report] examines the role of family, education, the media, political parties and the churches. It shows that the interplay between different people and the values they hold is a complex one. It is the task of all the social institutions and especially the churches to practise continual self-examination and invite challenge from outside when deciding what goals are needed for the future of our changing society". -- back cover.

"I hope that the two present book, which grew out of two national conferences on 'Genetics, Religion and Ethics', will be able to convey the content and import of papers and issues discussed there and thus to stimulate further conversation. The two conferences in question were held at the Texas Medical Center, Houston, in 1990 and 1992. Representing eight countries and many states, the two hundred and sixty participants from various Christian denominations as well as Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam, included persons of differing professional and occupations fields: clinical medicine, molecular research, theology, ethics, and public policy. Thirty-two prepared addresses and responses were given on questions of human nature, the limitations of genetic knowledge and technology, the particular concerns of women about genetic science, the theology of creation, and current research cases in genetic medicine. Selected portions of these papers are included in this book, with due thanks to the writers". -- A Prefatory Note.
Contents: Foreword / C. Thomas Caskey, M.D. -- A Prefatory Note dated Houston, Texas / J.R.N. -- The Two Frontiers Converge -- Genetic Advances in Medicine -- Genome and Some Social Issues -- Concepts of Human Nature -- Personal Religious Positions Individually Expressed -- Official Religious Positions -- An Exercise in Correlation -- Recommended Reading -- Index of Names -- Index of Subjects.
