"[W]hat problems prevent the lay people of the today's Church of England from exercising more effectively their vocation, their calling from God, to be the People of God in the Church and the world ? In this collection of essays by members of a General Synod Board of Education Working Party, chaired by the Bishop of Oxford, these problems are analysed: tensions between the clergy and laity, the ambiguous situation of women, unhelpful ways of worship. They are set in the context of theological reflection upon the role of the People of God, and of an ecumenical perspective. The final section of the book puts forward constructive suggestions for changes in liturgy, for joint clerical/lay church leadership and other ways of fostering new attitudes to the diversity of riches which the laity offers to the Church". -- back cover.

"The following pages contain what I sincerely hope is a fair account of the Anglican Congress of 1963. In addition to the sermons and formal addresses, reproduced in as accurate and definitive a form as time and circumstances permit. I have included both the group 'findings' as officially reported to the full Congress and a wide selection of informal speeches and comments made in the plenary sessions or sent in from the groups. I have also attempted a brief preliminary interpretation of the Congress as I saw it and felt its impact. It was the express wish of the Editorial Committee that the record of the Toronto Congress should include these elements of personal reporting and commentary and I have tried to carry out my assignment without worrying unduly about the criticisms that such an impressionistic account must necessarily invite". -- Preface, p. xv.

Verna Dozier "has gathered important writings -- her own and others' -- that answer three vital questions about ministry in the world. Part I addresses the question, `How does one make decisions when the choice is only between lesser evils ?' The task of the lay person is not as clear as choosing the good rather than the evil. These readings point to the agonizingly ambiguous questions most Christians face in daily work. What does an editor print -- and why ? How do politicians and bank tellers make tough choices and live with them ? Part II asks, `How does one live with the incomplete -- never quite making it ?' These readings point to the tough, slogging work that's involved in dealing with big issues -- getting state mental health policy changed, or dealing with hazardous waste. Part III asks the question, `How can we educate so that the resources of the faith are there for strength and not for solutions ?' This section addresses the relationship between the church and the world, theological issues related to the ministry of the laity, and specifically ways the institutional church can support the ministry of the laity where they live and work". -- inside front cover.
