"Copyright 1973 by Charles Mortimer Guilbert as Custodian of the Standard Book of Common Prayer" -- verso of t.-p.
"This edition of the revised forms of services most frequently used in the Episcopal Church has been put together with the purpose of providing, at as low a cost as possible, all that the people in the pews would normally need for the public recitation of the Daily Office and the celebration of Holy Communion, including the complete Psalter. Hence it is described as a 'pew edition'. It is not the draft of a revised Book of Common Prayer; nor is it a complete collection of all the revised materials needed for the conduct of regular public worship on Sundays, other Holy Days , or weekdays. The revised services are reproduced as authorized by the General Convention of 1973, in both the more familiar 'traditional' style and the more contemporary speech of today" (p. vii). .... The purpose of this pew edition is to facilitate the kind of regular, orderly, and prayerful use of the most frequently used services, which should make it possible for all congregations that wish to take a responsible part in the process of Prayer Book revision, to do so; or at the very least, to become acquainted, through use, with what is likely to be proposed" (p. xiii). -- Preface.
Contents divided into seven main sections: Preface / The Standing Liturgical Commission, Rt. Rev. Chilton Powell, Chairman -- Calendar of the Church Year -- Holy Baptism -- A Form for Confirmation or the Laying-On of Hands by the Bishop with the Affirmation of Baptismal Vows -- The Holy Eucharist -- Morning and Evening Prayer -- The Psalter.
Holy Baptism section contains: Additional Directions and Suggestions.
The Holy Eucharist section contains: Schedule of Optional Changes and Variations -- First Service -- A Penitential Order -- Second Service -- An Order for Celebrating the Holy Eucharist -- Forms of Intercession -- Offertory Sentences -- Music for Sursum Corda -- Proper Prefaces -- Additional Directions and Suggestions.
Morning and Evening Prayer section contains: First Order -- Second Order -- Additional Directions and Suggestions -- Order of Service for Noonday -- Order of Service for Close of Day -- Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families -- Concerning the Lectionary -- The Psalter.
"This pew edition consists of reprints from several publications as follows: The Calendar (from "Lesser Feasts and Fasts", 1973); Holy Baptism and A Form for Confirmation or the Laying-On of Hands by the Bishop with the Affirmation of Baptismal Vows (from Prayer Book Studies 16, 1973); The Holy Eucharist (from Prayer Book Studies 21 and "Services for Trial Use", 1970); Morning and Evening Prayers (from "The Daily Office", Prayer Book Studies 17, 1973); The Psalter (from "The Prayer Book Psalter Revised", 1973)." -- p. [462].

"This series of groundbreaking texts [from the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission, ARC USA and ARC Canada] is published in one volume to provide resources for preaching, study, catechetical instruction, prayer, and reflection. The documents here bring up to 1995 documentation previously collected and published (Wright/Witmer, 1985) that covers the period from 1966 to 1983. Some of these texts are available in the context of other ecumenical documents (Vischer, 1984; Burgess, 1989, 1995)." -- Intro. p. x.
