The Rev. Canon Alyson Barnett-Cowan presented the report and highlighted research being done for the development of strategic directions for ecumenical relations; the value of a talking circle method for contentious issues such as cultural diversity and liturgy; and the commitment to continue to engage in Christian-Jewish dialogue.

That the Council of General Synod send a letter to the Honorable Anne McLellan and to the chair of the CIHR stating concerns regarding the content of the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) discussion paper, "Human Stem Cell Research: Opportunities for Health and Ethical Perspectives." The letter should note specifically that a more comprehensive analysis of the moral issues and implications of human stem cell research was not conducted, and that the process included only limited public consultation and debate. CARRIED #31-05-02

That a Human Life Task Force be re-established, reporting through the Faith, Worship and Ministry Committee to the Council of General Synod, to reflect theologically on the ethical issues surrounding biotechnologies, euthanasia and assisted suicide, reproductive technologies and human cloning, and to monitor ongoing developments in these areas. Membership of no more than 7 should include 1 member of the Faith, Worship and Ministry Committee, ethicists, theologians, scientists and clinicians from the various disciplines as required by the issues. That this Synod urges the Federal Government of Canada to resist any changes to the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement that will further restrict the right of national legislatures to place limits on the patentability of living organisms, including plant materials, believing that such limits are essential to the ability of developing nations to protect and maintain control over the genetic resources through which their populations may become self sufficient and upon which their economic futures depend.
Amendment
The mover and seconder agreed to change the words "urges" to "urge" and the word "resist" to "oppose".
The amended resolution now read --
