"This book explores the relationship of women and men in the church today, and how this affects the search for church unity and for renewal. It includes expert assessments of the WCC's 'Community of Women and Men in the Church' Study, feminist, perspectives on biblical texts of liberation, vivid reports from Christian communities in contexts as diverse as India and Berkeley, California, and incisive accounts of the Orthodox perspective on issues of women and men. Issues of the community of women and men are one focus of Faith and Order's study programme on `The Unity of the Church and Renewal of Human Community'. The book gathers the papers and report from its second (Prague) consultation, with theological reflections on the issues and process of the meeting and an introductory essay placing the meeting in ecumenical perspective". -- back cover.

"For the fourth time since 1967, representatives of united churches and church union negotiating committees have met to exchange information, seek solutions for common problems, and lift up publicly their vision of Christian unity. The document that follows is the final report of this meeting, held November 18-25, 1981, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. .... Forty-six delegates participated in the eight days of discussion, fellowship and worship, the majority of them from seventeen churches which have already reached across confessional barriers to become united. .... A framework for the discussions in Colombo was provided by the two papers appended to the following report". -- Preface.

"The fact that people read and understand texts in different ways is surely one of the main sources of Christian division, and one of the reasons Christians remain divided today. What is the role of culture in shaping our ways and means of interpretation ? A certain diversity in interpretations is to be expected and celebrated. But can there be agreed criteria for setting the limits to diversity ? Could there be guidelines for interpreting texts and symbols ecumenically, in a way that bridges some of our confessional and cultural differences ? Questions such as these have formed the basis of the work of the World Council of Churches' Faith and Order commission in the area of ecumenical hermeneutics. This book brings together the text of Faith and Order's study process (`A Treasure in Earthen Vessels') as well as several essays contributed along the way by participants from different confessional and regional backgrounds. These essays speak to the complexity and depth of `the hermeneutical problem' in the ecumenical task, offering insights, raising still further questions, and laying the ground for further work". -- back cover.

"The special significance and achievement of the meeting in Madrid consists in the fact that the Standing Commission clarified and planned the work of Faith and Order until 1989, the next meeting of the Plenary Commission. Thus, clear perspectives for the implementation of our programmes during the next two years were established. The present Minutes contain the reports presented to the Madrid meeting and the reports and decisions from the meeting itself. The Report of the Potsdam consultation of United/Uniting Churches will be published as a Faith and Order Paper". -- Preface.

"It is not an exaggeration to sat that dialogue between united churches and the Christian World Communion (CWCs), formerly called the World Confessional Families, is at the heart of the ecumenical movement; it deals with nothing less than the final shape of the unity we seek. This small book -- bringing together recent, previously-unpublished materials in this discussion -- is presented by the Faith and Order Secretariat of the World Council of Churches with the hope of stimulating further dialogue in the period following the Vancouver Assembly". -- Intro., p.
