In 1985 John Howe, retired secretary general of the Anglican Consultative Council, published a "study of developments in the Anglican Communion, particularly from 1958 on, but including an outline of the earlier history of Anglicanism." The book was "Highways and Hedges : Anglicanism and the Universal Church". In 1990 this book was "expanded by addition of a 77-page final chapter. `Continuing the Story' was prepared by Colin Craston, chairman of the Anglican Consultative Council. This chapter brings the account of developments in the communion right up to the preparations for the most recent meeting of the council ACC-8, held in Wales this summer. There is a good evaluation of Lambeth 88 and a helpful summary of the continuing discussion of authority, unity and diversity in the communion. Updates on ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, and on the discussions of mission and evangelism, complete the chapter".
"Presented to the Anglican Communion in recognition of the contribution of Bishop John Howe, Executive Officer of the Anglican Communion 1969-1971, and Secretary General, the Anglican Consultative Council, 1971-1982, and to The Lambeth Conference 1978 as an aid to its deliberation on Authority". -- p. "This report captures the essence of the multi-faceted, multicultural Anglican Communion through the sermons, hearings, reports, and resolutions from the 10th Meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council held in Panama City in October 1996. There the Council wrestled with the key issues that must be addressed by the Anglican Communion as it faces the challenges of mission, human sexuality, fundamentalism, Islam, crises, morality, evangelism, liturgy, ecumenical relations, and structure in the twenty-first century. Includes the complete text of 'The Virginia Report' on church structure, 'The Dublin Report' on liturgy, and an address by the Archbishop of Canterbury that discusses the possibility of an Anglican Congress in the near future and the topics set for the 1998 Lambeth Conference". -- back cover.

"So, it is this biblical principle of headship, which apparently commits the church for ever to male leadership, which is the real sticking-point for many, mainly but not exclusively in the evangelical tradition. But have they got it right ? Has scripture to be interpreted today in that way ?" -- Intro., p. 3.

"The Anglican Communion has responded with enthusiasm to the Lambeth Fathers' call for a Decade of Evangelism. In these pages lay persons, evangelists, scholars, bishops, and clergy convey stories of 'Sharing the Good News through Mission' in their part of God's world. As the title suggests, evangelism and mission are inseparable. These chapters express that reality against a background of cultural diversity and experience". -- back cover.

"More than ever before, [the] tension between friends came out into the open at the conference of mission agencies with partners, held in Brisbane, Australia, in December 1986. It probably represents a completely new phase in the development of relations around the world between Anglican churches, missionary and development agencies and ecumenical bodies. Partnership between these groups has been tentatively growing from the old paternalistic days when some churches had money and they could dole it out to 'less fortunate' church in the Third World. Through many struggles and through deepening friendships across the world, and in particular through the 'Partners in Mission' Program of the last 14 years, the relationships have entered a new, more mature, phase". -- Intro.
