"The picture that emerged was of a twofold sexual ethic inherited and transformed by the New Testament authors. One part of it was a property ethic; its cardinal sin was greed, leading one to trespass on one's neighbour's property. The other part was a purity ethic, against which the fundamental offense was -- well, it is difficult to say in modern English, We are accustomed to refer to it in academic language as 'impurity' or 'uncleanness'. Yet, these terms, indispensable as they are, have an air of academic remoteness about them; they do not convey a sense of the visceral impact, the repugnance felt toward those things a given society has defined as 'dirty'." -- Preface, p. ix.

A review of volume three in "The New Church's Teaching Series". Reviewer is generally very positive about this volume which "focuses on hermeneutics, though with a clarity of style and directness of diction not usually associated with the term. Johnston presumes some acquaintance, on the part of his readers, with basic `navigation' of the Bible. But he also assumes that they will have a certain anxiety about the process of reading and interpreting the Bible themselves" (p. 315). The reviewer main concern is Johnston's decision to work with the two hermeneutical filters of liberation theology and the feminist hermeneutic which he does not feel most readers ("heterosexual, white, Anglo, suburban Episcopalians relatively untouched by the experience of social oppression" p. 317) will be able to respond to.

"Forgiveness is not a step-by-step process, but one of conversion and of seeing God's way. Once you discover the depth of God's love and the knowledge that deep down you are forgiven, you can see the world anew. And only when you accept God's forgiveness can you offer it to others". -- back cover.

"What unites this collection is the view that [the] Windsor [Report] does not provide a way forward for Anglicanism. Contributors write from a variety of standpoints, including justice for gays, opposition to centralization, and the need for legitimate moral diversity within Anglicanism. They offer a means of grappling with what has become one of the most controversial issues within Anglicanism, and also a way of reflecting on the future shape of the Church, and how inclusive that Church is going to be". -- back cover.

"In the last decade, renewed appreciation of baptism has undermined theories of ministry that, overtly or covertly, turned the ordained clergy into a superior class of Christians. The issue of ordination has also proven a major sticking point in efforts to draw diverse traditions of Christians together in the creation of a more ecumenical future for the churches. This book focuses on two questions: (1) How are the ordained related to those not ordained ? (2) How do different traditions of ordination related to one another ?" -- back cover.

"There is a lot of tension in churches today about whose ministry is primary -- that of the laity or of the clergy. `Living on the Border of the Holy' offers a way of understanding the priesthood of the whole people of God and the priesthood of the ordained by showing how both are rooted in the fundamental priestly nature of human life. After an exploration of the ministries of laity and ordained, Countryman examines the implications of this view of priesthood for churches and for educating those studying for ordination". -- back cover.
