"The following pages contain what I sincerely hope is a fair account of the Anglican Congress of 1963. In addition to the sermons and formal addresses, reproduced in as accurate and definitive a form as time and circumstances permit. I have included both the group 'findings' as officially reported to the full Congress and a wide selection of informal speeches and comments made in the plenary sessions or sent in from the groups. I have also attempted a brief preliminary interpretation of the Congress as I saw it and felt its impact. It was the express wish of the Editorial Committee that the record of the Toronto Congress should include these elements of personal reporting and commentary and I have tried to carry out my assignment without worrying unduly about the criticisms that such an impressionistic account must necessarily invite". -- Preface, p. xv.

"Edited by Frank D. Gifford, Ph.D., S.T.D., Dean of the Divinity School, Philadelphia".
A collection of 42 sermons by Anglicans from around the Communion including five Canadians i.e. Howard H. Clark, Kenneth C. Evans, Robert S. Rayson, Charles E. Riley and George B. Snell.
"In making a survey of preaching in the Anglican Communion to-day one might well expect sermons and preaching methods that differ in various ways from the commonly accepted standards of the Protestant pulpit and from Roman Catholic preaching. In part, this book is designed to afford material for such a study, and to enable the reader to discover for himself just what are the doctrines and ideas being presented and the methods employed by representative preachers today in the Episcopal Church throughout the world. The editor has spent nearly two years in correspondence and preparation, having begun this task because men preparing for the ministry have asked why it was not possible to obtain a book which would present for study and analysis examples of the work of Anglican pulpits to-day". -- Foreword.

"The idea for this book arose originally out of the planning which was being done for the Anglican Congress of 1963. The publication of a small volume, setting forth the subjects that will concern Congress delegates, seemed eminently reasonable. With chapters written by men with particular competence to deal with their respective subjects, it would provide a good background for the discussions and deliberations of those who met together from all parts of the Anglican Communion. .... Therefore, the various authors wrote their chapters with ordinary Church members in mind, all those who are endeavouring to find the frontiers, plan the strategy, and help the Church fulfil its destiny. And it is our hope that 'The Church in the 60's' will, in some measure perhaps, assist the reader in his share of the work. This book has also been written with the small parish group in mind. A leader's guide is available to help groups on the parochial level explore the frontiers of the parish in religious, political, and cultural areas of the modern world. It may also assist them in considering effective parish mobilization and strategy and aid them in fulfilling their vocation and destiny in the Anglican Communion". -- Preface.

"The 1966 conference in Chicago focused on that part of the Church's total ministry which is carried forward by lay people and on that segment of their ministry which is exercised in the world of occupations, citizenship and elsewhere in the common life. The Canadian delegates numbered 66, appointed by six denominations, the Canadian Council of Churches and one Allied Religious Body. There were eight Roman Catholics present: six as observers invited by the National Council, one by the Canadian Council, and one as a major speaker. Taking into account the delegates, observers, consultants, speakers and guests, accredited visitor and Work Group Chairman, the total registered attendance was 441. ..... "The basic idea of the Prairieopolis Conference is to provide an opportunity for church people to view the Church and its mission against the social and economic reality of the region. There are marked changes in style of life and in population characteristics taking place in the prairies and shield regions of mid-western Canada as in other parts of North America. .... The Church has not well understood this changing society. It may be that the Church's difficulty in relating to its changing setting arises, in part, because it operates within inherited structures which focus attention on problems of a previous age. The objective of the conference are: First;y, to discover the social and economic realities of Manitoba and North-Western Ontario; Secondly, to perceive God's action in secular society and to determine how we may act responsibly in the light of this; Thirdly, to identify the principal obstacles within the Church which hinder its mission". -- p. 1.
