"Some readers may feel that comparatively more space has been given to the history of the Syrian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches than to the work of the Protestant Missions. I think, this will serve as a corrective to the ignorance of people about the non-protestant missions. Certainly it is important that more should be known about the work of the Protestant missions also. But no single volume can uniformly deal with all the missions. We need more books on the subject. It is hoped that this book itself will inspire the writing of other books, particularly on the contribution of the Protestant missions for the growth of the church in India. We also need similar books on the history of the Church in other Asian countries". -- Foreword, p. iv.
Contents: Author's Preface dated Tumkur, 29th February 1960 / C.B. Firth -- Foreword dated Bangalore February 1961 / J.R. Chandran, General Editor -- The Tradition of St. Thomas -- India and the Church of the East (up to the ninth century) -- The Middle Ages -- The Portuguese: St. Francis Xavier -- The Portuguese and the Syrians -- The Synod of Dampier -- Jesuit Missions -- The First Protestant Mission -- The Early Nineteenth Century -- Further History of the Syrian Christians -- Missions and the Nineteenth Century Renaissance -- Mass Movements: Medical and Technical Missions -- The Roman Catholic Church in India since 1800 -- Co-operation and Church Union -- The Emerging Indian Church -- Bibliography -- Maps -- Index.
