"This text, suitable for individual study or group discussion, was commended to the churches by the WCC central committee in August 1992 after a three-year process of drafting by an international group of economists, theologians, ethicists and church leaders. The text identifies 'signposts' for judging how the economy works and exposing the hidden values behind economic decisions. and offers suggestions about how these insights can lead to Christian action for a greater economic justice. Study questions included". -- back cover.

"Come Holy Spirit -- Renew the Whole Creation". That prayer is the theme chosen for the Seventh Assembly of the World Council of Churches, which will meet in Canberra, Australia 7 to 20 February 1991. Presented in this book are six Bible Studies around the Assembly theme. Beginning with our confession of faith in the Holy Spirit, we go on to study the theme as a whole, and the four sub-themes which provide the link between our confession and the demands it makes on us as we try to live our faith from day to day. Included in each study is a wealth of comments and testimonies from friends in many parts of the world". -- back cover.

This consultation "marked a turning point in the understanding of inter-church aid. It was not preoccupied with projects and funding; the emphasis, rather, was on the comprehensiveness of diakonia and on the importance of the local church as agent of change. No wonder the meeting has been described as `a unique participatory process which sought to shape a new pattern of relationships between churches'. The official report presented here gives an account of what took place at the consultation. It includes the major presentations given at the meeting and the recommendations made; together they explore what it means to be neighbours to one another". -- back cover.

"The first gathering in this process was held in Ronde, Denmark, in February 1993. It produced the widely-discussed text `Costly unity'." "The second gathering in the study process -- the meeting which supplied the material for this book -- took place at the Tantur Ecumenical Institute, near Jerusalem, Israel in November 1994." "The central thesis of this book is given in its title: mission, understood in the perspective of the kingdom of God, allows -- even demands -- total freedom to serve that kingdom, to participate in its announcement and in its manifestation. A recognition of this Christian freedom could generate untapped resources of imagination and energies in the churches; it could save us from frustrating discussions around secondary issues and provide unity for the most diverse forms of the church missionary vocations in the service of Jesus, the Servant King. This book is in two distinct parts. The first part, a biblical, theological discussion of the kingdom of God and its missionary implications, begins with a reference to several situations where churches are confronting difficult choices as they make missionary decisions. This is followed by an analysis of the world ecumenical discussion on missionary priorities during the last twelve years, highlighting the values that are at stake, both in local situations and in ecumenical dialogue. The biblical symbol of the kingdom of God, seen as the focal point of Jesus' ministry, is presented as the basic theological category in consideration of the mission of the church. .... The second part introduces a series of articles, written approximately during the same period as is covered in the survey of international discussion, where the basic hypothesis of this book has been explored and discussed". -- Intro.
