"`After Terror' offers a sustained reflection by some of the world's most celebrated thinkers on the most pressing question of our time: how can we find ways to defuse the ticking bombs of terrorism and excessive interventions against it ? It offers an antidote to the fatalistic global holy war perspective that afflicts much contemporary thought, focusing instead on the principles, issues, and acts needed to shift course from alienation and conflict to a path of sanity and goodwill among cultures and civilizations. The central aim of the book is to advance contemporary thinking on the causes and implications of 9/11 and thus provide the essential elements of a blueprint for humanity. It features 28 original essays by some of the world's leading public figures, scholars, and religious leaders". -- back cover.

"The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. George Carey, has complained to the government of Sudan about restrictions on the celebration of Easter in the capital Khartoum. In a letter to the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Dr. Mustafa Ismail, the text of which has been released today (April 23 [2001]), Archbishop Carey said that he was forced to `the reluctant conclusion that Christians in Khartoum experienced discrimination, harassment and obstruction in their desire to celebrate Easter together peacefully and in public'. The events referred to by the Archbishop followed the Governor of Khartoum's last-minute withdrawal of permission for Christians to gather at a site in the centre of Khartoum, Green Square, for meetings with the visiting German pastor, Reinhard Bonnke."

Notes
Archbishop's Christmas Message includes comments on the 10th Anglican Consultative Council Meeting in Panama in October 1996 and the current state of the Communion's finances. "What a humbling example it was when the representatives of the suffering Church of Sudan not only paid their quota in full, but also gave $100 to the UN Office in New York to continue the vital ministry of Bishop Jim Ottley ! My brothers and sisters, I leave you to draw out the challenge of that wonderful testimony from Sudan. If they need our help so much and yet from their slender resources year after year pay their quota, how can any Provinces say `we're sorry. We can't support the Communion this year because we must balance our books first'."
