"[I]s communion focused on baptism the ecumenical way forward ? Is such a baptismal communion in fact all we really need ? ... The project had three stages, each discernible in this volume. Basic for the[project is a study paper produced by the Institute for Ecumenical Research, Strasbourg, at the request of the Department for Theology and Studies of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) ... This study paper seeks both to lay out a particular understanding of baptism and the church as communion and to outline and analyze the various ecumenical issues raised by the interconnection of the concepts 'baptism' and 'communion'. After discussion within the LWF, this study paper served as a point of reference for the second stage of the project, a consultation sponsored by the Strasbourg Institute in Hvittorp, Finland, in October 1996. This consultation was designed to be ecumenical, analyzing the topic from various angles. The various contributors were asked to comment on various themes, ranging from abstract questions of ecclesiology to particular questions of practice in situations where baptism and communion have become especially live topics. The third stage is the book you now have before you, the publication of the study paper and of the contributions to the Hvittorp consultation, revised by the authors following the discussions". -- Intro.
